That really sucks Mitch. My local dealers don't stock every part to repair a car either. More cost effective to order parts "just in time" they say.

My mother drove my father's 1938 Pontiac without water. She pulled into a gas station because it would barely run. The guy at the gas station filled it with water and cracked the block.

My wife did the "keep on driving with no water" thing with our '76 Honda CVCC. When it got hot enough it lost oil pressure which caused ignition shutdown. She managed to get it started and drive it two more miles before it shut down again. After towing it home I filled it with water and it started, but water was squirting out between the head and block like a New Orleans Water Pumping System. I assumed the engine was shot and I always wanted to build an electric car so I planned to put an electric motor in it. I was too slow--she sold it to a neighbor. The neighbor replaced the head gasket and is still driving it. Apparently the oil pressure/ignition interlock saved the engine.

I don't think driving without coolant in the engine is just a female thing. I am sure guys have done the same.

This engine didn't have any coolant in it. I put about a half gallon in and it was runnin' out the lower left corner of the radiator. While tryin' to do the compression test, (the starter could hardly turn the engine), water was shootin' out the front under my workbench, (compression in the cooling system). I don't believe I got more than a cupful out of the entire engine. The engine oil cooler assy. which is also the oil filter housing melted, the lower intake manifold melted, and the whole engine is pumped full of plastic. The cam bearing journals in the cylinder heads were packed with plastic, the cams are wiped out, and I believe a lot of the crap in the engine is the teflon coatings off the piston skirts.
We saved the aluminum front timing cover, the oil pans, the valve covers and the upper intake manifold, (plenum). The rest is junk.
The sad part is, if and when I get the left head and get this engine together, my guess is that the catalytic converters and 0/2 sensors will be junk, and as Murphy's Law applies to Mitchell, the heater cores (front and rear) will probably leak costing me a lot more lost hours.
When it's all said and done, Chrysler will probably have about 8 or 9 grand in this thing. But, once again, they warrant stupidity.

Simply amazing. And hard to fix, too.

Wow Mitch!
Had a cracked head on my 4.0 87 Cherokee, ran better than seven years that way. The burned valves on the other hand...

If I read it right, he could be fined as much as $10K and spend time in jail pretty much up to the discretion of the judge.

That would have bought a lot of chickens :?

Interesting. Different sort of Amish than I'm used to a few counties west of you.

Every once in awhile you see stuff that'll just break your heart:
Image
77 MGB

58 MG A and Saab Sonett III from 1972-1974

Unknown Coupe

This guy has posted signs on his property proclaiming "Trespassers will be treated to a dose of rock-salt in the seat of their pants", or something along those lines. Sure would have liked a closer look at that old coupe...got to be packing something great under that long hood...anybody know the make/model? Could have spent all day snapping pic's of this guys "collection".

Please do!
I saved those. You have given me a creative start on the upcoming TCA Meet at York, PA, in April. Every one of those shots is a treasure of ideas. Thanks!

You're right, Healey! It just breaks my heart to see someone's place all trashed up like that with those old junk cars, scrap prices being nice and high as they are now. The guy should turn them into cash!

It's difficult to imagine how anybody could be so cold and out-of-touch with mainstream-Earth to kill an eagle. I understand saving chickens, but of the two - eagles and chickens - which is a dime-a-dozen, so to speak, and which is priceless to the world? How far do those chickens have to free-range? Wouldn't some sort of compromise have been preferable over shooting? Could't the poultry have a canopy of some sort overhead?

Geez! Murph, I don't think any Amish farmer is interested in spending money, only making it. Guess he did what he thought he had to do, and so now he'll pay the price.
