Jon, in looking at my old water tower, I'm sure you can do a much better job painting yours than that. If I had to do it again, I'd weather mine differently. Maybe the best thing to do is look at some pictures of prototype towers.

Can't wait to see your tower, buddy! I might make one in O-scale soon too. Maybe you can give some pointers. Where are you buying the hardware?

Tramp, some of the hardware I'm going to rob off my demolished MTH tower, ie, the spout, chains, weights, and rollers. The nuts and washers I've ordered from Grandt Line. See here:

The hoops for the tank I'm going to run some solid copper wire through a roller press at work.

Back in the 70s, RMC had an article on building a water tank. They used fishing line for the bands, a heavy gauge of fly line may work.

I saw the same tip in O-Scale Magazine. I guess I'm confused, were steel cables used or band iron?

The ones I have seen are steel, or iron round bar, threaded on the ends for a turnbuckle. The round bar is cheaper than flat, plus it's a little stronger, and easier to thread the ends.
Usually, the tanks had more bands on the lower portions of the tank, and wider spacing towards the top.
The reason; more pressure/weight at the bottom of the tank that at the top.
Another place to get a perspective on the engineering is old wooden silos. Same problem, same solution.
(plus you can also look for old tractors in the process! )

NEW YORK (AP) - No, Katie Couric didn't suddenly lose 20 pounds. The incoming "CBS Evening News" anchor appears significantly thinner in a network promotional magazine photo thanks to digital airbrushing.

The touched-up photo of Couric dressed in a striped business suit appears on the inside of the September issue of Watch! which is distributed at CBS stations and on American Airlines flights.

CBS News President Sean McManus said he was "obviously surprised and disappointed when I heard about it."
