That is a B&O tender - The trucks are SP tender Commonwealth. I think they also were used on B&O tenders.

I will vouch that the post-war Lobaugh USRA Light Pacific indeed came with those trucks, which indeed look like they came from a passenger car. These shots are from the files:

The prewar Lobaugh B&O Pacific was produced to look like the B&O P-1d locos. Those locos were built using boilers from older Mikados at Mt Clare Shops. They had a deep taper in their boiler but I think Lobaugh's boiler taper is excessive. I have a B&O published drawing in 1/4" scale of the P-1d and I really like these locos. I built a mechanism for one several years ago using correct 19 spoked drivers (B&O practice) I machined from Ken Henry iron castings. I have the Lobaugh tender shown above that was used on the locos. All of the photos I have seen of the real locos show the tenders with Andrews tender trucks.

As I understand it, the B&O released a set of drawings for many of their models as a promotion to model railroading, probably associated with the B&O portable layout in some way (if nothing more than originating in the same marketing department). The drawings can be found in a book, Scale Modeling and the B&O Railroad, published by the B&O Museum. Here is a photo of the prototype, also found in the book on the same page:



I think Joe is correct -- the boiler taper on the Lobaugh model is a bit excessive.

If I was to hazard a guess, the excessive taper is to accomidate an oversized firebox to clear the motors of the day. A check of the height of the top of the box would tell if it was raised a bit for the motor (not uncommon; much like Lionel did with the cab of the scale Hudson making it look rather hideously out of proportion, for example). Then, the extra taper brings the boiler down to proper height and diameter at the courses forward.

A few minutes with a rule and a look inside would confirm that guess.

Not really a B&O fan, but I too like the early blue/black/grey schemes. I have a PA, E-7, and an FT AB in that scheme. The FTs are soon going back to Grande Gold or WP pumpkin soon.

Also have enough B&O 21" K-Lines to keep me happy!

To my eye it looks more like the Lobaugh is foreshortened, I'd measure the length against the prototype, that might be the answer.

It looks to my eyes that Lobaugh's transition in the boiler is almost twice as sharp as it should be. I like the look of the real P-1d but not the Lobaugh boiler.

Here is the new cab. Changed the personality of this long-neglected model. It still needs to come forward a quarter inch.
