There was actually trust put into the academics and the researchers that assembled that information. Once upon a time, we could trust those sources. That has since faded to trust but verify, doubt all, and discount anything that one disagrees with or finds inconvenient.
So which method seems best? Both - for their particular circumstances and time in history?
