Odd thing about Office is the serious fracture between "old hands" and people who never used earlier versions. Some of this is "they Don't know what they are missing. I did notice that someone that had not used the earlier versions was picking up on the controls (I.e. "the ribbon") while those that had been using it before it was even office just struggled to find the controls/menu items. For a while Mac version allowed a "classic" view. Spent a lot of time googling how to do what had been simple in Office 97 but we now hidden in the later versions.

XP was a decent melding of 95 front end with NT guts. 7 was a pretty nice successor to XP and actually ran well in 64 bit mode. Too many holes to fix. Weirdest thing I ever saw was a brilliant HS intern took on a feasibility project of getting some Windows programs to work in X windows. No biggie now but he did this 20 years ago. He actually remapped X windows to look like NT 3. Graphics were not as polished as what would become XP but it worked. Unless you opened up a terminal window you wouldn't know you were on a Unix system.

As for me, I got stupid. Six months ago I waited two months before updating after I started getting those annoying messages to update. The wait was for Microsoft to get the bugs out. Not remembering any problems last time, I did not wait this round. Oh yeah! Now I remember, never accept anything from Microsoft until they have time to debug it.

No how do you ignore updates? They seem to happen automatically when I turn off the computer.

You picked automatic update install. It’s somewhere in your settings. You can change it at anytime.

On 10 it was very hard to disable. The default setting is automatic and if it requires a reboot, tough luck. I had more complaints about this than anything else.

Red Hat Enterprise had a great tool for managing updates. I think we had 20+ systems scattered across multiple buildings and even campuses. I could schedule installs, control reboots, notify users.

Microsoft got draconian because lack of applying updates was how systems were getting compromised. Of course having so many holes did not help.

It's something about Windows 10 not being supported after November unless updated now. In my settings, it's gonna do it in the middle of the night. I despise that message: We have an update that's gonna make your computer better! Yeah, right! What's really going to happen is that in the morning, before work, at least 2 things that worked perfectly before the update are not going to work at all.

I don't think I ever recall an update that made anything 'better'. I got a "student" discount to buy MS Office which updates rendered useless. Downloaded Open Office to make things useable.

I have been running Apache now for many years; besides being freeware, the thing actually works with no hassles. Upgrades are painless and do what is advertised. The same with Firefox and Thunderbird.
