What an interesting way for folks to have perched the structure like that. I've actually never seen anything like it (not even clinging to the many hillsides around the rivers of Pittsburgh) and would probably not model it that way - too far fetched IMHO . It looks like it's ready to slide off and down to the right. But I like the whole store and already have the delivery van, the horse and mules, and that buckboard-type vehicle; even the boy wearing the bib-overalls. That flight of steps I'd pass on.

All true. I knew you'd say that (or somebody would.) Of course, you are right, but what I was trying to exclaim was that it was so odd to perch that store that way that hobbyists who wanted such a scene on their layout might think I was being far-fetched by crafting it that way for them - that I was being UNrealistic and arbitrary perching it like that. If I were to do such a scene for a client, I'd give them a copy of the photo you provided so they'd have it to show visitors to such a vignette on their layout, Actually, I'd craft it on a flat piece of real estate and let them perch it. Or, I'd craft it in-place directly on their layout if they specfically directed me to do so, guided by your protoptype they wanted memorialized.

I'll give you another example of what I mean. I have seen scenes in real life that were such odd mixtures of structures that I would not elect to model them on a layout. Somebody might find it "unrealistic" or arbitrary -silly. An example would be a road I saw, in real-life, that had a small factory situated right next to a lone Capecod-Levitown style house, complete with well-kept yard and children's yard toys (a hold-out in a changing neighborhood, transitioning from suburban to small industrial,) next to a dress shop, next to another small factory; next to a Dairy Queen. A prototype, yes, but on a layout such a conglomeration might look like a hobbyist happened to buy too much stuff, and having limited space, just squeezed it all into the available miniature real estate.

That could just be me, but since it would be my hands and my time invested in any project, I'd decline such an effort as the perching seen in the photo you provided, prototypical or not, as well as in the scenario I mentioned that I have witnessed in real life.

I understand and have the same thinking about it.
Here in Pembroke we have a bank building that was built in 1980 next to an ice plant that was built in the 1910s
next to a Dairy Queen that is from the 1960s.It did look a little odd.The ice plant is gone now replaced with a
do-it-yourself car wash and storage buildings.Still looks odd.

In general, I agree.

But for when one is modeling a specific area and/or era, including a specific unique scene can make all the difference to putting everything into perspective. What really like about the above scene in the photo is that it captures a not uncommon aspect of 2 roads coming together from 2 different levels in a wye that happens along side of the mountains in that area of PA and that also serves as a switchback of sorts. That large stir area however is not something that I've seen before. I should stop in Charmian someday to have a look around to see what, if anything, is left from that era

I checked out Google Earth to find the now long gone store.

My best guess, based on the road intersection and the terrain, is the railroad is out of sight to the right of the photo. The present intersection has the main road coming in from the right, across the tracks, and leaving the scene off the bottom left of the photo. There is a triangular intersection up the grade to the other minor road, just in front of the store if it were still there. The lot is now mature trees.

The X's can be erased easily on a digital copy. While I was at it, I did some fade correction.
