The much-beloved Model 1049 Super Constellation boasted unheard-of refinements, such as air conditioning, reclining seats, and extra lavatories. It was a plane ahead of its time, at least twice as fuel efficient as the industry's first jets and as efficient as many of today's modern aircraft. I had the privilege of flying as a passenger on one from Los Angeles International to Alexandria International in Louisiana. When the pilot came in for a landing he flew it right through a giant thunderstorm.* The wings were flapping wildly, the seatbelt stopping me from leaving my seat and flying around inside the aircraft was painful when holding me down. Alternating with negative gravity I was slammed into the seat. When I saw the runway out the window it appeared to be taking 12 foot leaps at the airplane. And yet, my first landing as a passenger was as gentle as any I have experienced since.

*Since that wild experience in the Constellation, I have never again had a flight that flew through a thunderstorm cloud. Once, on a trip to Orlando, the pilot flew in circles for an hour waiting for a thunderstorm to pass over Orlando International.

There was one of those involved in a collision with another jet over the Grand Canyon. The collision knocked the tail off of the constellation, and both planes ended up on the bottom of the canyon, no survivors. Pretty sure there is a piece about the crash on "You Tube".

The rail network of Switzerland is one of the densest and spectacular in the world. It covers a total length of 5063 km of lines with 3652 km on international gauge 1435 mm, 1312 km on metre gauge and 68.5 km of 800 mm or 750 mm gauge.

1,435 millimeter = 4 feet, 8 1/2 inches
1,000 millimeter = 3 feet, 3.37 inches
800 millimeter = 2 feet 7 1/2 inches
750 millimeter = 2 feet 5 1/2 inches
800 millimeter = 2 feet 7 1/2 inches
750 millimeter = 2 feet 5 1/2 inches

(For comparison, the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is 3 feet (914.4 millimeter) gauge.)

The bogies on the GoldenPass Express change gauge width in a matter of seconds with the passengers on board. When the train arrives from the metric gauge tracks at Zweisimmen station, the train passes over a gauge adapting ramp and the train changes gauge.

I think redefining and so called improvements are not always good or right. Look how many times the food pyramid has changed in our lifetime. You want to do something worthwhile, cure cancer or end poverty or something equally benevolent.
