So I got the camera ready, and was going to take some builders photos of the "blocked out" model - as soon as I got the camera ready, it started to rain. I then took a couple iPad photos on the kitchen table, after coaxing the blind kitty in out of the rain, and tried to edit it enough so you can see where I am headed with this thing.

It will never be a world-class model - just a source of entertainment for a couple evenings, and maybe it will be in good enough shape so whoever winds up with it can make it at least run. Tender is a different project - the AN tender awaits.

New photo - cab and running board need slight adjustments before permanent attachment. Might make a new stack and smoke box front:

Six years ago - so time to enliven this forum with some re-run photos.
I just converted a Lobaugh Pacific frame to a Harriman Ten-Wheeler configuration, then got to wondering if indeed I need another 4-6-0. Answer - probably not. But now that I look at it, that All Nation conversion is going to get an SP cab - maybe even sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, here are some re-runs. My first Ten-Wheeler was an attempt at SP 2355, a T-32 now preserved in a park near Phoenix. It does not have a totally correct boiler taper, and the rods are simply modified rails, and worst of all the motor is in the firebox, meaning this one can haul four cars on a good day.

I should note that Bob Stevenson has provided a lifetime supply of check valves - I really should put a pair on this thing. They get painted red.

The incorrect taper is aft of the steam dome - the top should slant down toward the cab. As you will see, it is reasonably dramatic on some of these
SP locomotives.

The T-32 had 68" drivers, adequately simulated in 17/64 by the Lobaugh Pacific castings. Most of the rest had 63", which I simulate with 66" drivers of several different types. I have four Ten-Wheelers not of Harriman lineage, and I have not made up my mind what will go on top of my latest mechanism.

Here is one I am still struggling with. It runs well, but needs some extra stuff, like a bell and some pilot details. The drivers came from a pile Harold Peters had - he said they were Max Gray. All are the same size counterweight - all came with Max gearboxes.

On second thought, maybe I did add the pilot details:

Bob,
First off both the painted and unpainted renditions look spectacular. I would not get too hung up on driver diameter; it looks proportional and accurate to my eye. Also like the spoked pilot wheels. Weathering on the painted version is also just right. If you need a bell, I can spare a couple.

The ten wheelers are one of my favorite SP steam locomotives. I have at least 3 in the PSC version and have collected at least 4 more in the Williams Camelback. The Williams boilers will be tossed then I hope to fabricate SP boilers in retirement. One of the All Nation cast boilers might suffice.

Usually I can get the Williams locos for $200 or less in mint condition. Just not that popular. On the other hand, PSC is fragile and pricey.

The ten wheelers, IMO, are kind of perfect for a smaller layouts, kind of like moguls.

Thanks for sharing! Always inspirational.

One of my favorites - the prototype for this one actually ran in the late 1990s. It features absolutely correct boiler taper and tender drive. 17/64, of course.

Turns out 2348 is now painted black. I need new photos - but I should decal it first.

I kinda lost track - I spent two days looking for a similar model to 2348, without square counterweights. I indeed found it - I almost decided it didn't exist, and that I had swapped drivers - but a photo study showed I had two such models. I have an excuse . . .

This evening's project will be an SP-style cab for the dirtbag AN above - almost anything would help it, but this should change its personality - then a few more photos for this thread and off to something else. I did get the half-round wire, and can finish the Erie Berk.

Just so you know what you are up against, from my collection: four(!) Harriman ten-wheelers, plus an additional T-32 mechanism. One freelance, made with live steam components . The above, and a B&O All Nation (Varney), and two Saginaw G5s. Nine and a half.

That doesn't count any ten-wheelers that the rest of you may find. Surely Carey has a few?

Before I was out of high school, 1970, I wanted an All Nation or Max Gray 10-wheeler. I never got either. I did assemble an AHM Rivarossi plastic 10-wheeler that got lost. This past year I was in the process of building another Rivarossi 10-wheeler. The kit came to me minus a small part of the valve gear. That was a bummer. I was also attempting to put a can motor into it, that didn't go as planned. I may have to stick with my Weaver diesels! :D

I have already posted one Scale Models Railway Ten-Wheeler in this thread (see page 1), and brother Pete posted another (also on page 1). Here is a third:

This model is attributed to Al Kamm. From what I gather, there were three generations of Al Kamm. I believe this was built but the first or second, but I have no way of confirming that. I thought I had some video of this pulling a string of suburban cars, but if I do it's hiding from me. I will put that on the production schedule.

Nice! I knew there were more O Scale ten-wheelers out there.

Here is the one I "lost" - the found version is a lot further along, and in addition my dirtbag All Nation has a new cab, so a photo session cannot be that far off.
