If the drive train is as bad as Pete says, hopefully they will reconsider this issue since these products are the ideal things to hand to kids at train shows with their inexpensive and simple remotes.
Pete's correct about the early LC stuff and even the very early LC Plus (without Bluetooth). When I went looking for the parts diagrams I was astounded to see the early LC+ had the crappy horizontal truck mounted motors. The next series switched over to vertical motors which should work much better. Another clue as to which type of drive is used is to look at the feature set. If the model has constant speed (aka cruise) it has to have flywheels and a sensor which locks out the horizontal truck drive.
Don't get me wrong, the ~$200 sale price on these loco's is an incredible deal. I was hoping I could kitbash one of those to replace the crappy drive on my franken-loco. Not a chance. The shell is already pretty nice on the LC+ engines and most kids won't care/notice hand rails and truck side castings.
I MAY still try to do one more kit bash special on a Williams NW-2. The Lionel one is twin truck mounted horizontal motors but I've added sounds and command control (even electrocouplers). It's the US Navy switcher from the 94 set. First new train I bought when I got back into the hobby. I added the second motor when I found it could barely pull the cars in the set and then continued to incrementally update it with CC, Sounds and couplers.
