Before the end of the video you can actually smell the smoke. I'm trying out this video website. Let me know what ja think. To the right of the clock time in the video window you can click on the frame and it gives you a big screen look. ..........................Enjoy

I didn't see it, sir, but I have been out-of-sorts w/ some dental surgery I have been enduring, and my wife may have inadvertently cleaned it out when I asked her to delete all the advertising and unsolicited mail. Would you mind sending it again?

Mitch, Wow. Thank you very much for spending the time and for the clarity of your instructions. Sometimes, it seems such graciousness and friendliness are rare these days, so I am especially appreciative of your kindness. Thank you very much. I will endeavor to try the procedure, but right now I am distracted by my dental woes/pain (from which I am trying to distract myself by conversing here!)

Thanks a lot, Highrailjon! What a surprise. Some of you really good guys that I have met on this forum are apparently pretty good at being welcoming and pleasant! Thanks for posting those photos; I'm glad you like what you see. Coming from you, considering the work you have done that I have seen here, I feel lucky to have your approval.

I started my layout in the mid-90's and have changed it numerous times. For example, that neighborhood photo you posted for me used tobe a RR yard & turntable/roundhouse area. Some of the craftwork in other photos is what I have done for others on/for their layouts.

Holy Mackerel Murph!
Details everywhere. I usually don't surf MTJ Photos. After seeing some of yours here, I had to go take a look.
Who makes those roads? Do they come pre-printed with lines and "STOP" painted on them?

Thank you, very much, Wayne.
I love to give attention to the details. In fact, as an example, I just returned from a trip to upstate NY to closely observe what the area looks like between a farmer's fence or field boundary and paved roads. I really never noticed carefully, and now that I want to model something like such a place, I went to learn the reality of it all. I did learn. I'll probably drive into PA next week for such a looksee. :)

Regarding the roads, they are called "Moondog Streets," but I got them years ago and believe they are no longer available. At least, I cannot find them, and I still have their packing slip! To that point, Jim Elster, owner of Scenic Express is looking into it; I sent him a sample just last week, and he is persuing carrying them or something like them.

Murph, I agree with the others—really nice work. I particularly like the dingy grittiness of the railroad contrasted against the brighter, cleaner residential area.

Wow, Thanks Tramp. Actually, while crafting those areas, I didn't think of establishing a contrast, so it's interesting for me to read your assessment. I suppose I have subliminally remembered places, esp. from my youth, and they have ended up expressed on my layout. My wife likes the contrasts, too; that is, she likes and often comments to guests, about the distinct "neighborhoods," each w/ its own "look" or flavor, as she puts it.

Hi AG, Thank you for the kind words. I appreciate hearing from you guys, esp. since we are peers/colleagues in a hobby based in/born of so many positive things in our lives.

I dust - and I have no drop ceiling, so the "snow" can be considerable - in one main way: I use my wife's old sable make-up-application brushes, reaching as far into the layout as I can. For more interior spots, I grab the brush with one of those extend-a-reach devices and flick away. Also, I use good, new, boars-bristle house painting brushes to dust, esp. for vehicles, some of which are glued down, so they do not wander around when I dust them.

Trees, of which I have many, to mimmic the real world, are misted w/ "Ortho Home Defense Max"spray. It keeps the occasional bugs at bay (actually, dead in the streets - strictly non-scale!) I also use it in low- foliage areas, incl. on streets. It seems to obliterate any dust on tree tops.

I gave up using lichen as shrubbery, since it must be misted to keep it from crumbling to dust, in my experience, and I am not that dedicated that I go around misting all such foliage w/ glycerin. Where I could, I replaced all of it w/ a variety of the many wonderful products Scenic Express carries.

In extreme cases, I actually mount the platform, from a ladder. The entire layout, constructed of 4'x8' , 2'x8' , and 4'x4' components, is made of 2x4's and 3/4" plywood, in sections which are all carriage-bolted to each other, so nothing moves an inch under my weight, as I traverse the layout. All the buildings are removable, so I can step here and there, as are several vehicles, removed temporarily for my feet to step down and balance myself while I dust.

For the "water" areas, I use the sable brushes, too. Anything rougher than that scratches the surfaces.

How 'bout that for a thorough explanation! :D Murph

After the October fires that we've had out here, all the ash blowing around for months, I put one of those "Ionic Breeze" air purifiers in my so-called train room. More of a storage yard for readiness to go to the museum, as long as the windows aren't opened and the door is kept closed most of the time it does a real good job of cleaning the crap out of the air.
