You speak from experience?
Roger,
Yes. Seven trips over the bars.
Bob,
Look... 1986 or 1987?
The first three trips over the bars were with those straps they call clips. I decided, since I could not get out of the straps when crashing, I might as well go with the clipless pedals (the ones you clip into with a loud, "CLICK!") The next three trips I just rotated my feet to unclip (or would that be to unclipless), raised my legs and landed on my feet. Number seven came too fast. One moment I was zooming down the side of a steep wash and the next I was doing a face plant in the wash. At least my feet blew out of the clipless clips. (One of the advantages of clipless, they let go if enough stress is placed on them.)
I have not been over the bars in several years. I guess seven lessons was sufficient. Talk about a slow learner.

My initial experience with Shimano SPDs included coming to a full stop and transitioning from the vertical to the horizontal. All while securely clipped in.

Hard to pull out of toe clips from this camel-toe face position.
I purchased a road bike after training my feet to twist out of the pedals on my mountain bike. It came with camel, no, I mean toe clips. Testing it before purchase, I pulled up to the front door of the dealer, stopped and fell over while desperately trying to twist out of the camel, damn you Jon, I mean toe clips. The guys came running out of the shop asking, "Are you hurt?" I, extracting myself from the bicycle, asked, "Is my new bicycle hurt?"
