Wish you lived in Orangeville. I'd have some confidence trying to pull the damn thing myself if I had you to cover my back. The hell of it is 2 things- I always have a tremendous need to know what went wrong, and the second is that if I don't go after it, I'll always wonder if it was just the gasket and was fixable for cheap.
When the first engine went, a piece had cracked off the head alongside cylinder four, killed the compression, but fellinto and remained in the combustion chamber, and beat the living SH*T out of the chamber and top of the piston, and occasionally was getting stuck under a valve and holding it open, causing a loud ticking as the what? pushrod? was flapping in the breeze.
Ominously, I had also developed this intermittent ticking this time too. And it was stumbling every time I had to start it after it had been sitting awhile- in hindsight, antifreeze must have been seeping into the combustion chamber, and causing problems until it got blown out.
Then it REALLY let go. I could hardly see the receding house in the rearview, for the cloud.
One other deterrent- the guy that swapped motors for me also 'had to know' what had gone wrong, but when he tried to separate the head from the block, he broke off a stud. Sounds exactly like something I would do. Those b*stards were on there TIGHT!
I DID take one long hard look at the engine, thinking about whether to try it myself, but I didn't have any beer in me, so I got intimidated.
And then, there's always your punchline... LOL LOL

I am of an age and just enough of a packrat that I still have easyouts in my toolbox from my experiences with numerous head gasket jobs on a V8 flathead ford. It was a '53 and not a pretty car. My father thought a torque wrench was a waste of money. Of course, when a bolt head breaks off, you skin your knuckles and fingers on four or five others. All on a Saturday morning preceding a date with a cool Betty. The Bettys liked cool tan dudes, not skinned up grease monkeys.

If I remember correctly when an engine approached a "red block" or red light he was required to stop. But with engineers having to meet strict time schedules these "red block charlies" were often ignored. Hence the invention of the "train box". It was a device added to a locomotive that shut the engine down if it passed a red block charlie.
And so went the days of....... Runnin' that red block charlie!!!!!!!
