Durn, Jackie. That freight I was riding sat on a siding for hours while I was trying to make my way back to the camp from San Berdoo. I coulda walked but my dogs was just too tired. Coulda made it faster on a hand car but didn't want to get smacked by an AmTrak.

Well, Frank, you will be happy to know the church is addressing your needs.

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Thou shall not drive under the influence of alcohol. Thou shall respect speed limits. Thou shall not consider a car an object of personal glorification or use it as a place of sin.

The Vatican took a break from strictly theological matters on Tuesday to issue its own rules of the road, a compendium of do's and don'ts on the moral aspects of driving and motoring.

A 36-page document called "Guidelines for the Pastoral Care of the Road" contains 10 Commandments covering everything from road rage, respecting pedestrians, keeping a car in good shape and avoiding rude gestures while behind the wheel.

"Cars tend to bring out the 'primitive' side of human beings, thereby producing rather unpleasant results," the document said.

It appealed to what it called the "noble tendencies" of the human spirit, urging responsibility and self-control to prevent the "psychological regression" often associated with driving.

The document's Fifth Commandment reads: "Cars shall not be for you an expression of power and domination, and an occasion of sin".

Asked at a news conference when a car became an occasion of sin, Cardinal Renato Martino said "when a car is used as a place for sin".

One part of the document, under the section "Vanity and personal glorification", will not go down well with owners of Ferraris in motor-mad Italy.

"Cars particularly lend themselves to being used by their owners to show off, and as a means for outshining other people and arousing a feeling of envy," it said.

t urged readers not to behave in an "unsatisfactory and even barely human manner" when driving and to avoid what it called "unbalanced behavior ... impoliteness, rude gestures, cursing, blasphemy ..."

Praying while driving was encouraged.

Vatican City, the world's smallest sovereign state, doesn't have many of the problems listed in the document.

It has about 1,000 cars, the speed limit is 30 kph and one Vatican official said the last accident inside Vatican City's walls was about 1-1/2 years ago, resulting in minor damage.

The few chances I have had to drive in Italy I prayed like hell while on the road.

How many hobos have used a car as a place for sin?

The "Ten Commandments" for drivers, as listed in the document, are:

I. You shall not kill.

II. The road shall be for you a means of communion between people and not of mortal harm.

III. Courtesy, uprightness and prudence will help you deal with unforeseen events.

IV. Be charitable and help your neighbor in need, especially victims of accidents.

V. Cars shall not be for you an expression of power and domination and an occasion of sin.

VI. Charitably convince the young and not so young not to drive when they are not in a fitting condition to do so.

VII. Support the families of accident victims.

VIII. Bring guilty motorists and their victims together, at the appropriate time, so that they can undergo the liberating experience of forgiveness.

IX. On the road, protect the more vulnerable party.

X. Feel responsible toward others.

Hmmmm, let's see, there was the 69 Wagoneer, the 74 LeMans, the 74 Impala, the '75-76-77 Camaros, the '69 Vette, the '79 LeMans(still have), the 79 1/2 ton Chebbie, (still have) the '81 Malibu,(still have) the '87-90 Cherokee, and the '86 Comanche(still have). The trucks and the Vette were the toughest places to "commit sins" but the rest were not al that bad....

Fun is "sinning" in a Reading caboose.... (and, no, I'm NOT telling which preserved one, and where it is/was!)

J*n! We were down on the Cape to surprise my dad for Father's Day. Tramp's recovering from too little beer as he was on his best behavior. He's out on the wicker taking slow sips of LaBatt's and the color's starting to return, fever breaking.

So - what did you do with all those "pods" anyway? Cole slaw for the entire state?

ps. Wayne - funny to read after just having driven through Boston!
