There. That's the hell of it. You're novels are, at turns, hilarious, exciting, thought-provoking, with imagery only a poet-novelist can bring to life.
It has nothing to do with the quality. There is so much published-crap out there. It's about getting the 'break' with the in-crowd of the publishing world.
If you ever have an opportunity, scan that photo of the Dewey and post it. I freakin' LOVE that poem. I think I must have been there in a former life, or something.

Pete, there's a painting (1980) that goes with that poem. It's a view from inside a boxcar--you see part of the rusted metal door and plywood walls--looking out at the Dewey, neon reflecting in the wet macadam, dim lights on in the bar, evening sky, Point beer logo painted on the brick building side, road disappearing in the rain. The painting was created before the poem.
I'm buying a pre-Pat's round. Belly up, hand out, smile on.

Pete, I still have my other freight-riding painting which I based another poem on called "Distance." It's a view from a flat car looking at the back of a boxcar and the desert on each side with signal lights and the curving front of the train in the distance, also at late evening.
