There's a lot of gouging and inflated costs associated with shipping, but then again, the actual costs of shipping have gotten out of control - USPS continues to go up and up and up with less quality of service and reliability, and bizarre shipping routes. Costs of shipping supplies have also risen - we all try to recycle shipping supplies but it's not always possible or prudent. The 85 cent boxes I used to buy 50 of at a time are now over $2. Bubble wrap and packing peanuts are silly money, and a roll of tape is nutz.

Only good experience I have with shipping is that at the big PO I can waltz in, use the self-serve station, scan my discounted shipping labels on boxes into the system, drop the boxes in, and print out my receipt without interacting with any humans if I don't want to, and I don't.

Seeing the Ebay topic pop up has me wondering how Dave (Scalecraft) is doing. My recollection is he’d hit a rough patch a while back. Anyone heard from him? Hope he’s well and safe and enjoying his trains.

Well, it's up to $1575 with 8 hrs left so it has been noticed and bringing big bucks. Congrats to the seller.

Cost of USH cab forwards, at least those sold by reputable people, appears to have appreciated. After all I have seen more USH/Westside Big Boys than I can count for sale lately. Rarely do I see one on the bay. This one just sold for N of $2K.

I surmise that there were just fewer made. In the case of Lobaugh, it is ultra rare.

The reputable people part is key! Tonight, the same seller (Bill Davis) sold a Precision/KTM New York Central De-Streamlined Hudson for $2,851.01: https://www.ebay.com/itm/147432371315

Brasstrains.com's price guide says the Hudson is a $1,450 model..... but their pictures of the model they had aren't as nice as Bill's photos of the model he just auctioned.

Bill sells a lot of "new" models and that makes a difference IMHO and they draw in a certain segment of the market who wants new or mint. I hvae no idea how rare this model is, but new is hard to find these days.

I have noted over the years that Bill's selling prices tend to be significantly higher than other sellers -- reputation (and probably repeat buyers of which I am one) makes a difference. I know that I have buyers that have me "saved" for those weeks when I'm selling off traction items and cars that I've built that I no longer "need" here.

Yeah, and Bill starts off really low with price and I think that adds to the auction drive. He gets several or crowds of buyers in on low prices and some just keep justifying the price. Again, this might be a very rare model......I have no idea.

I agree this has a lot to do with reputation, being "known" for packing-shipping right, known for dependability and also fair prices. Bill is all of that and much more.

As far as what's happened to eBay, I was a hard-core eBay seller and taught classes on it 2002-2011. Now it's been stripped of its free market appeal to small sellers like Bill and including myself. Less than 30k a year, which happens fast selling 5k models; but its also mostly quantity, in excess of 10k items a month is about the size of it to be able to successfully beat the establishment of loss or the dreaded BPC, and the fee structure.

Just like retail, eBay told us in 2011, figure a 30% loss off the top just like WalMart or established retail. Theft, BPC, returns, destroyed and lost merchandise. Its all very true. Try selling used electronics, or toys. As far as niche markets like brass trains, watches, Tonka Toys. Lesney Moko Matchbox, these buyers are loyal, have money, and repeat. They also remember people like Bill. I don't miss eBay, I hated it after 2012. Starting in 1997 a went through years of small proprietorship and glorified garage sale phases, and finally american pickers stuff. I made amazing money at it, 15-18 years ago but little by little the captured laws and lobby, with a goal to eliminate proprietorship and mom and pop small business won out, now comes the control state of the internet, today eBay it is a sham riddled with scammers, illegitimate buyers, and fees piled upon fees, upon fees.

A lot of the good buyers left ebay years ago, still, like me we all still look everyday and I still buy, but I do feel sorry for the sellers adding huge amounts to the prices to offset the quadruple dipping by ebay and the feds in an attempt partly to run off sellers like me with less than 30k sales a month ----Niche is great, eat the loses and still end up with a fun time, like Bill does. He is a service-oriented institution to us, and a damn good one. Support him whenever possible. As far as a viable business, only these people that started huge like the means of Trainz in Georgia hold the keys. Largely over volume.

Just like manufacturing, want to make a fortune in model railroad?, start with a much larger one.

That was a favorite quote of John Smith (Pecos River Brass).

I started buying and selling on EB in 1998, but besides the problems you described they destroyed most collectable markets within a few years as items that were hard to find suddenly became very easy.

But, today, we have a very different crowd selling on EB and some really ignorant sellers who know very little about what they are selling.....at least in the train sector where I roam.

I bought a KEY Challenger 2 months ago that priced very right, as the sellers photos sucked and he got no interest. So he kept dropping the BIN price until it got to the point I couldn't resist it. Well, turns out he didn't know how to pack either and it got damaged in shipment. He's one of those estate sellers who sells everything under the sun purchased at local sales.

He just couldn't understand how FED-X could damage this train, as he "packed it so well, which he always does" his words. He merely put it in the hard foam that KEY used, without any additional tissue paper or the blocks of support foam to keep the model from moving/shifting inside the hard foam......and it shifted around. Totally his fault. The outer box was maybe an 1" from the inside KEY box on most sides, which most likely would have failed a damage claim as well.

Since I had no intention of getting stuck with the damage without some compensation, I bit my tongue and played along with all his BS and arrogant claims of his knowledge.

He also stated he's had a rash of damaged shipments lately and he blamed the carriers for his packing ignorance. He was young and I don't know how to deal with people like this. A know-it-all that knows nothing.

I sent photos of the damage to prove what I got and he couldn't open the photos (jpeg) on his phone. He let me know he was also a computer expert and always opens photos, so this problem must be my fault or I sent corrupted photos. Eventually he got them open, but if he's a computer expert, I'm Bill Gates. We must have had 24-25 texts messages and several phone calls and he had to sense I was becoming irritated. I finally told him I was sending it back and I caught his attention.

He offered a partial refund larger than I would have asked for. Fortunately, the damage looked much worse than it's turned out to be and can be fixed like new and never show. I did have to completely dismantle the model and in the process gained a lot of respect for KEY steam locos. I always considered them to be a lot more delicate than any of my KTM models, but they're engineered very well, including being able to dismantle them to work on. And, with the price adjustment, a very good buy turned into a great buy with a little sweat equity.

That that happened just indicates just how artificial the value in those collectable markets really ever was.....almost all are just granfalloons waiting for implosion,

Ignorance is endemic, epidemic, and encouraged as the norm today. Start there and you'll not be disappointed in people.

....how FED-X could damage this train......

FED-X and UPS seem to be in a contest as to how far they can throw deliveries.......last purchase that arrived here (included those 2 Robico kit cars) via Fed-X must have done a long toss and somersaulted halfway up the porch steps. I notified the seller that his packing was rubbish for delicate passenger cars that should have been double boxed, etc., particularly if using Fed-X. Seller's response was to send it all back and then to also block from bidding on both of his selling accounts. The 2 brass duck bill passenger cars were unscathed and well worth the complete price and I can restore the Robico cars so all staying here and write off another incompetent seller.

He also stated he's had a rash of damaged shipments lately and he blamed the carriers for his packing ignorance.

It's always someone else's fault
- there's another of today's norms....blame anyone, everyone else rather than accept any responsibility.

BTW, I very rarely lose $'s on eBay sales. Then again, I very rarely overspend on anything anywhere.

Yeah, in our crazy market, the only way to buy is when the prices are too good to lose $$$ on. But, that is subjective too.

Again, I buy little, and I sell what I no longer require in my shop. Folks that bought stuff 10-40 years again expecting it to hold value, increase value, and then be their retirement funds made poor decisions.

But, traction models, drives, and detail parts are still getting crazy prices. Just got 4 traction items in my shop; 3 assembled of which 2 are powered. 4th is an older kit - cast aluminum and not too terrible either, but lots of grinding to do on the roof casting. Cost was..........$0.00,

As i indicated in a previous note I have become so frustrated with what I have received from so called reputable sellers that I will not buy it unless I can see it in person. One very reputable seller on EB also a well known O scaler sold me a fairly expensive locomotive on EB. His idea of double boxing was wrapping the Sunset box with just cardboard without styrofoam peanuts, or bubble wrap. Fortunately the item arrived ok, but still overcharged for shipping.

Yet again another reputable seller sent me an item that had less than optimal packing that screws were falling off as a result of vibration in shipping. When I complained about it, there was all sorts of pushback.

The gist is this: even reputable sellers seem to be behaving badly as of late.
