Yes; terribly unreliable systems costing billions if not more. Lot of it being FOMA driven....

I wanted to challenge your billion-dollar statement, but Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas said $18 billion has been invested in AI by Perplexity.

American companies invested more than $335 billion in artificial intelligence between 2013 and 2023, according to S&P Global.

So, I will challenge, "terribly unreliable," instead.

I asked Google's GEMINI,
HOW MANY ai ARE THERE?
It is impossible to provide a single number for how many "AIs" there are, since artificial intelligence is a constantly evolving field that includes many different types of technology. The number of AI companies and tools alone is in the tens of thousands. Instead of thinking of AI as a single entity, it's helpful to categorize it by its capabilities and functionalities.

I asked PERPLEXITY,
HOW MANY ai ARE THERE?
There are approximately 70,000 artificial intelligence (AI) companies globally as of 2025. About 25% of these companies, around 17,500, are based in the United States. The number of AI startups fluctuates around 50,000 globally, with the U.S., China, and the U.K. being the top countries for AI innovation and companies.

Gemini said it did not know. Perplexity said 70,000 with 50,000 FOMOs. I see nothing terrible about those answers.

Side note-- Grammarly is an AI. I use it even though it occasionally hallucinates. I don't mind; the errors give me a reason for being here.

I think that you will find that in the last 2 years even more has been invested.

So, I will challenge, "terribly unreliable," instead.

You're asking the fox to guard the henhouse..... Roughly 30% reliable on medical diagnostics seems terrible to me. Lying about the same seems worse; lying about the inability to provide the structure of caffeine, writing articles with citations that the AI just made up....

Okay, maybe almost as reliable as terrible humans.......but worth the FOMO investment.....well, if the money flows into your hands I guess you might not think so.

You win, especially in the medical field.

The image below reminds me that misinformation is not new to the internet.

Maybe the real risk in all of this is the potential for a second round of market upheaval similar to the dot-com bust of 2000. It seems an environment rich in opportunity for exaggerated claims of capability, if not outright fraudulent claims.

See here:

https://falloons.com/

And not too far away, at that.

Anyway, the viewer/user count seems to be consistently in the 65-85 range, so I'm thinking the bots have been, for the most part, vanquished.

Not much in the way of new members here at MTJ...it looks like the last member addition was back in April of 2025. Feels like there are just 10-12 folks actively engaged here, not too many. Hard to tell how many of the unregistered guests are bots.

For a long time it was next to impossible to join this site. Has it gotten any easier or not?

Sadly, true.

Hard to tell how many of the unregistered guests are bots.

Not sure how you'd be able to differentiate the two.

I thought that when we started the effort of trying to juice this place up a bit, there was some commitment to improve the "join" process. I'm guessing that hasn't happened.

Maybe find someone to test it?

Unfortunately, after six months of effort geared to broadening the subject matter to attract new folks, there seems no interest on the part of the owner to fix the sign-up process so new folks can actually join and participate.

I do know of several folks who have tried to join, and have been pigeonholed by a couple lapsed members who did indeed notice and were interested in perhaps renewing their passwords long forgotten.

I admit that, after that six month timeframe passed and nothing had happened on the admin side, I for one have rather lost interest in the attempt. I must admit I called this one wrong and apologise to anyone upset by the attempt to kick this off of top-dead-centre.

Oh well, we gave it a good shot.
