Detroit Publishing Company, from the collections of the Library of Congress.

I like that very old omnibus parked by the trolley stop.

Sometimes it doesn't pay to get up in the morning. In 1913, a trolley derailed and went over the side of Baltimore's infamous "Long Bridge":

The wooden bridge, then 57 years old, was reaching the end of its useful life, with some complaining that it was just a matter of time before disaster struck. First this, then two years later, a long section of it caught fire, putting it out of service for months. Located on the south side of Baltimore City, connecting the Brooklyn neighborhood with Port Covington and the downtown beyond, it would be replaced by the Hanover Street Bridge in 1917.

The Hanover Street Bridge remains in service to the current day, some 105 years after its construction. I was over it recently, and it could stand some work.

I've looked at a lot of photos over the years, and that's the first one in which I noticed the journal boxes on a street-car.

Part of National Security. Started in WWI, to keep the enemy from knowing how we supported our equipment. Stayed in effect all through 20's and 30's, then WWII re-inforced that. Eliminated after VJ day.

Censors fogged out journals.
You will find the odd personal (not published) photo from that era that crops up from time to time, as does this one.

Interesting. I've never seen fogged out journals......

Then obviously you have never been involved with active censoring nor the recipient if said censoring.

Well, sadly that's not true. And are you writing about journals or journal boxes? It started out about journal boxes.

That's an eye-catcher, as is most traction MOW equipment. I'd like to see one of those with an equipment/material load.

A double end work flat has been on my list of "to do" projects for my column for a long time..........with several other projects. Maybe next year?

Would certainly make for an interesting build, as would one of those set-ups for maintaining the catenary. I saw a photo awhile back of a truck that had scaffolding on the back for that purpose...wish I could find it.

Only really work on that would be the 2 outhouses for each end; but that's just stripwood, scribed siding, and maybe a bit of roof stock and few Grandt Line windows and doors; I think what delays me is that I have a limited number of 100% under the floor drives available. I used to score 1-3 every year at the Chicago/Indy meets and that's been a dry well for a few years - price on drives is nutz on eBay.....

as would one of those set-ups for maintaining the catenary.

I did build a line car years ago - should be in my Firefly Shops thread somewhere.....
