Rufus, that ain't right! ROFL.
I'm reminded of the phrase "Saved by the bell". I think that refers to the oldtime morgues. Seems sometimes the body brought in was not really dead, it was hard telling in thise days. So each morgue slot had a hand bell close by. Any number of persons were saved when they came to in the morgue and they were able to ring the bell to alert the attendant.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it unless corrected otherwise. LOL

True. In fact, some cemeteries had a bell mounted outside the individual family stone private mausoleums with chains leading from the bells to attachments inside the buildings and directly inside the coffins to allow for anybody who "came to" inside a coffin being able to signal to the outside world that they were, indeed, not dead.

I have seen some of these, dating quite a ways back in time, for example, in a cemetery in Hamburg, PA.

Actually, not true.

While the phrase has been credited recently to a current fascination with these rediscovered mechanisms and the rather macabre purpose, it actually comes from boxing, and is quite old. It refers to a boxer being knocked down to the mat and being counted out. If the bell is rung signifying the end of the round before the ref can finish the full count for a knockout, the rules state he is not KO'd but may be removed to his corner and hopefully revived to continue in the next round, hence "saved by the bell".
