What's New on the PRR Panhandle 2.0?

The transformation of Lionel 6-28538 Western Pacific Alco S-2 #553 into Weirton Steel #207 is now complete. A friend 3D printed a new stack for her. The work was done by Christine Braden - it was well done, quick, and nicely priced. I am very happy with it. Take a look at the stablemates.

207 looks great, although could stand a bit of filth given its line of work
That backscene still amazes me.

Watched the TCM-produced biopic of Dean Martin last night; numerous shots of Steubenville back in the day, even one with “The Bridge” in the distance. That town must have been a rockin’ place 90-100 years ago.

It was quite the wild place. Check this out:

The Panhandle will feature Water Street, Steubenville's notorious red-light district.
By the way, my father knew both Dean Martin, who ran numbers early in his career and Jimmy The Greek.

I cut a lot of ABS structural pieces today! As you recall, I have one complete Open Hearth roof truss and 9 in process. I started cutting pieces for those trusses. Here's what I got done:
- Main roof diagonal supports (4 per truss; 36 total). These are Plastruct 90005 1/4" ABS angle shapes. They were a bit tricky as they had to be cut at a 30 degree angle in 4 different directions. Yes, that's hard to visualize and even harder to do without creating scrap.
- Uprights to support the roof diagonals (4 per truss; 36 total). These are also Plastruct 90005 1/4" ABS angle shapes. Fortunately, these were cut at 90 degrees - nothing tricky about the cut.
- Ventilator diagonals (Plastruct 1/8" ABS angles); these were straight 90 degree cuts. I made 24 of them.

What cement do you use when working with Plastruct? I’ve tried a variety of glues with mixed results. I frequently end up with a fairly fragile bond.

If it's Plastruct ABS, MEK is your best generic option.

I am using the medium CA made by Bob Smith Industries and marketed as particular hobby shop brands, e.g. Hobby Express. It's in the 1/2 ounce bottle with the purple unreadable label. Hold the pieces together for 5-10 seconds after applying the glue. Gives me just enough time to get them into position. The very thin, real quick stuff (1-3 seconds) is appropriate for when the parts are clamped together in the correct position and you want capillary action to get the glue to the right place. I've never had much luck with that.
The de-bonder comes in handy as well.
That's how I got my fingers unglued to type this.

Rufus, George, thanks for that. Next Plastruct project (likely a heating-oil distributor's tank complex), I'll try those. I think my worst experience was with Ambroid ProWeld; I recall it dissolving an half-inch of the beam I was working with.

Exercise some caution if using MEK; highly flammable and not good for the respiratory system. I reserve its use for ABS which fortunately is rare in my shop. Straight methylene chloride (no longer readily available) works great for regular styrene.

I had some of that Ambroid ProWeld - it didn't seem to hold well. I pitched it.

Over the last few days I have been cutting ABS parts for the Open Hearth:
- Each roof truss consists of 38 parts and I have 9 trusses to build. These are in progress (going fairly slowly).
- Cut about 124 parts on Sunday; various angle shapes.
- Cut another 48 yesterday; mostly "H" columns.
- Today I also started putting together the column assemblies for the outside walls. Each assembly has 2 large "H" columns and 6 gussets.
