Makes sense. It's a shame that so many towns got rid of their squares. Gettysburg still has theirs, as does New Oxford. Always love the white-knuckle thrill of finding your way through, especially with today's moronic drivers.

I think Washington, DC; conduit trackage and the round sign just to the left of the arch. The rollsign appears to say "GEOTOWN ...." abbreviated for "Georgetown Something". Plus that arch looks like on of the Washington system's carbarns.
A version of those round signs stayed around until well into the MetroBus era; overlaid with at least three different logos over the years:

DC Transit
MetroBus
They were heavy, cast iron about eight inches or so in diameter and slipped into a pipe.
