Weekend Photos - November 2020

Since the activity is pretty light, I figured we could move to a monthly format for Weekend Photos.

With the exception of a clear gloss overspray, I finished off the Lionel 184 bungalow-in-paper project:



It looks a bit weird to me, primarily because the front porch/entryway is so out of scale compared to the Lionel version. While the bungalow itself is probably 50% bigger than the prototype, the front bit looks about the same size...way to small. I need to go back and see if that's a function of how I printed it, or is the file just balled up. The dormer, by the way, is a hog-job, but generally looks okay from a distance.

A lesson learned - when assembling make the side-walls fit inside the end-walls. Doing it the other way and you get a slight bump-out on the roof-line, which will affect the fit. You can see a bit of that in at least one of the pictures.

I made the roof lift-off, just in case I decide I want to change the windows and stick a light in there.

Besides the clear overspray, I need to paint a sidewalk and maybe green-sawdust the base, maybe a tree/shrub or two.

Looking at those Toy Trains magazines for the next project.

A second attempt at paper buildings, the "Yardmaster's Office" from the April, 1954, issue of Toy Trains magazine:



Still a few flaws on my part, but I'm learning. Hal Carstens penned this for the magazine, and it could be used for a number of line functions. It would probably even work as a small station. I was going to give it a shot of clear gloss to provide a more "tinplate" look, but I think I'll instead leave it as is.

Nice. Paper/cardstock buildings are quite popular in the UK; Metcalfe is one brand, there are several more. I have a OO "kit" for a water tank that I will (eventually) blow up to O scale.

I’ve been using MS Paint to print/edit these things, but I’ve had poor luck with enlarging HO or OO models to O...details get a bit fuzzy when I blow them up. I’m wondering if there’s a better tool out there.

If they are just a basic jpg file expanding them will be prone to pixelation.

LED’s a consideration possibly. I’ve always liked the looks of night running. I stick LED’s in everything now. Nice job.

Excellent...looks a bit like this shot of the interior of Stick Pile Tunnel on the Western Maryland's Cumberland Extension:



Creepy shot, given the legend that the tunnel received its name from a work crew's discovery of an itinerant's body under a pile of sticks inside.

The photo is out of the Library of Congress. They have all of the engineering survey photographs for the various HAER studies. This one is from the documentation for the Western Maryland's Cumberland Extension. My understanding is that the tunnel originally had no lining, but one was added years later due to the occasional fall of debris from the ceiling.

I'm not a believer in ghosts, but that sure looks a faintly like a guy standing on the right-hand side of the track bed.

Howdy (climbing out of the lurking attic);(whew but it is dusty!)

Just wondering here..... were they dismantling the wood inner structure? Looks like several of the vertical posts have been cleanly cut off at the top and bottom. Nice modeling for sure.
