Stuff purportedly made (assembled) in the US still has a lot of offshore content. That's pretty difficult to root out, even with all of the labelling standards we've put in place. I'd be more than happy to pay a premium for made-in-the-US shoes, clothing, tools, appliances, etc.

Double? Triple?

Pretty much all your clothes........fair amount of the food at the grocery store is imported or from non-US owned companies (surprised me how many brands are owned by EU companies)

This is what I'm talking about...yeah, you'll pay more. You're not going to get Americans to work in a shirt factory at sweat-shop wages/conditions. If you're not willing to pay more, than stop bitching about stuff being made overseas where it gets made cheaper (at sweat-shop wages/conditions). That's why it's made over there...people won't pay $50 or $60 for a made-in-the-US Arrow shirt when you can buy a $25 Farrah made-in-southeast-asia shirt of lesser quality.

So, everyone that's constantly boo-hoo bitching about stuff made in China needs to own it and pay double.....and odds are that won't happen.

Stop buying their stuff, mate, and things level off real quick. Americans buy on price, not quality. Until that changes, American companies will continue to offshore manufacturing.

We try whenever we can. Wife got new washer and dryer last year and she looked a long time trying to find MIA (made in american not missing in action). Finally settled on Maytag, who we found out was bought by Whirlpool some time in the past.

First washer lasted 2 days and then it vibrated so badly on rinse cycle it would have torn itself apart, so it was exchanged. Second machine had a water pumper failure 2 weeks into ownership. I saw the pump when the technician took it out and it was "made in China" and was nothing but plastic. These are not cheap machines, but obviously built with cheap imported parts. Getting pretty hard to buy MIA.

Hmmm...we just bought a new Maytag fridge. I was counting on Maytag still being a premium brand. It replaced a Kenmore (Sears) which lasted 32 years.

Quality appliances can be manufactured anywhere. If you want to know which appliances are actually built to last, ask a repairman when he is looking at your current broken one. Or, better yet, ask him which one he would buy.

We bought a Maytag set about 40 years ago when we first got married. Lasted 30 years. We replaced it with a new Maytag set and the washer just made it out of warranty and it was going to cost more to repair than to purchase a new one. I asked around on the this forum and wound up with a GE. It was an HE unit but not Energy Star. Old school mechanical timers instead of PC boards. The repair tech (independent contractor, not associated with a manufacturer other than authorized to do warranty repair work) recommended an LG (Korean model). They actually get top ratings across the board in terms of value, reliability, dependability, kind of like Maytag USED to.

If the actual VALUE is there, by all means try to buy American. I am not going to buy an expensive piece of junk just because it says "Made in America" anymore than I will buy a cheap piece of junk made in China just because it's cheap.

BTW, most of this stuff is being made with machines, not people, no matter where it's being made. The cheap foreign labor excuse may still apply for shoes and some clothing but the bulk of the stuff is being produced in highly automated factories, both here and abroad. Not Rosie or Robbie the Robot machines, small dedicated units which do one thing only and usually do it quite well. The flaws in the US appliance are more engineering and quality issues along with an actual conscious decision to make the product as cheap as possible with little or no concern for quality other than it makes it to the warranty.

Both kids have LG and they've worked for years. For some reason the wife wouldn't go in that direction. :( And, I'm not about to venture into her department.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who could become Biden's attorney general, said breaking up Google should be 'on the table'
https://news.yahoo.com/senator-could-be ... 58450.html

Sen. Amy Klobuchar on Thursday praised the Justice Department for leaving open the option of breaking up Google as part of its antitrust lawsuit against the Big Tech firm.

"In a serious monopolization action like this one, it's important that a breakup remedy be on the table," the senator said.

Klobuchar is tipped to be a candidate for attorney general once President-elect Joe Biden takes power in January — which could spell trouble for Google.

What I think is interesting about this is how Google with it's biased news and contributions to the democrats can come back to bite them in the A$$....

Can you explain google’s bias. I thought Biden picked a google’s president for a cabinet position?

He's just making up stuff again skewing reality.

Both sides of the aisle seem to want to go after all the companies that have been successful in competing in capitalism and are also some of the top 10 employers in the US. Makes sense to break up and punish companies for being successful and keeping our economy propped up. I'm guess that they have only failed to make big enough donations to enough members of congress....

If you had read Google news for the last year like I did you might see it. Google contributed to the Biden campaign along with most of it's employees who are mostly progressive liberals. Maybe Biden will stop the democrats from proceeding with the breakup of Google. Could be worth millions of dollars to Biden... especially if he comes up with a Biden foundation like the Clinton's have. A little something for his retirement mansion.
