Can you live on a $300 check? That's what the republicans are offering.......

They get $300 on top of normal Unemployment benefits.

This additional unemployment insurance is creating problems with workers not returning to work........I've experienced it 1st hand. We've been dealing with contractors in KCMO getting the current house ready to sell, as well as doing some things to the new house in OK before we move. We heard from more than a few contractors that getting employees to come back to work with the $600 bonus was hard and now a little easier with the $300 bonus. IMHO people are inherently lazy and will take a handout instead of working if given the choice.

That's only if the unemployment has not run out -- after 6 months it has for a lot of people.

That's a pretty low, damning opinion of your fellow man.

Am I correct in believing that many of those laid off workers who are not returning to work at this time, they were the lowest paid frontline employees anyway? Whose salaries were barely above poverty level to begin with? The ones who held most menial jobs? Just curious. :)

There will always be "lowest paid" employees of that nature no matter what the salaries are.

It is!

And I've become soured with a goodly percentage of people in our country. We have Ring on our doorbell and get Ring alerts all the time. Can't believe the amount of crime that goes on and is caught on camera (sometimes stopped). Young guys in cars driving up and stealing little children's toys, bikes, etc. Wife showed me a video of a young woman running out of her house and stopping a guy who pulled up to the curb and starting stealing her kids bikes and toys, sitting 20 feet from the street. A 2nd young woman comes out of the house and commented "that is the same car that came through here last week driving slow.

Many acts are caught on camera of people breaking into or stealing cars. Saw one yesterday when a guy jumped out of the back seat and stole a gallon can of gas sitting on the sidewalk, while the owner was mowing 150 feet away. I am assuming these people feel stealing is easier than working. But, would you want this type person to work for you?

I've seen many videos where a hooded young person is running from parked car to parked car (in driveways) checking locks while a catch car paces him so he can make a quick getaway. Disgusting!

Sister-in-law works for a subcontractor to Ford Motor Co that does plant clean up. Workforce is predominantly black and they hire ex-cons and the contractor is out of Chicago. She gets along with everyone and they open up to her and the stories she tells of how hard they work, at getting out of work, are amazing. Many have actually clocked in and left the facility, only to come back a hour before their shift is over. Others find some place to hide out most of their shift so those who are working had to do more.

I've hired employees for 40+ years and in the real world "a decent percentage of people are inherently lazy" and don't last long on the job. Way more bad apples today than 2-3-4 decades ago, but we had them then too. Maybe this wasn't happening in academia, but in the real working world it is prevalent.

So yes, I have a pretty damning or disgusting opinion of many of my fellow man. They never fail to support this opinion.

Very sad, But with growing populations there are more of these types of people also.
Do you see a solution to this problem? Remember that to some it is a game.

Pretty sad. I've not run into very many of your fellow men (and women?) so I guess I've been lucky all my life.

Here's my take and it's pretty depressing and makes me glad I won't be alive all that much longer. A book could be written (and maybe has) explaining this changing face of American, but here is a brief condensing.

The same students we had in grade school and HS, who were near-do-wells for all kinds of reasons, but in one way or the other the system failed them, plus the true jerks/hoods/trouble makers, have all grown up. Throw drugs into the mix and it really gets tainted. The peer students had children and subsequently they didn't teach them very well or instill some of the important life lessons most of us acquired.....but, life has a way of doing that, if you have a little common sense and care.

Our peer near-do-wells and jerks had children, but these children in many cases learned no more than their parents and in some cases less. For this group to succeed they had/have to find it inside themselves. They have to want a different lifestyle than their parents, they want to achieve more, they didn't/don't want to grown up the same as their parents.....doesn't mean they don't love their parents....they just want more out of life. They have to dig themselves out, as some of us did to a lesser degree. But, a great many of them will just repeat the cycle in their parents footsteps.

So, now these children of our HS peers had children (20 and 30 year olds now) who were taught even less, "if" their parents followed in their grandparents footsteps. So, we've melted down into a society very different from when we grew up, with very different beliefs and individual responsibility. I'm not trying to judge any of them, I'm just saying its a reality in the real world.

How come so many of Indian and Middle Eastern people who've immigrated here are now the professionals. Doctors, lawyers, officers of large corporations, financial leaders, bankers, etc. Because the pickings in this country weren't as good and this type of person wanted more for themselves and their children. They were/are will to work harder to get what they want, unlike a large percentage of US citizens who don't care or found a way to work the system or are "inherently lazy" and will just let someone else take care of them...........like Bernie Sanders promises. Not trying to make this political, so lets not go there, but that statement is true IMHO too.

Too many drugs, too much alcohol, too much "let's party" mentality and lack of "work ethic" going on in this country today. We've become a feel good society who cares more about professional sports, Hollywood, Entertainers and how we look, than taking responsibility and teaching our children the right things. The liberal "hippy" generation of the 60's really F'd this country up.

I'm not sure yet, but it appears there are a lot of HS and College kids that appear to be more responsible than the generations that preceded them during the past 30-40 years. We can only hope.

Rant off.

I remember when it was a big anti-Asian immigrants time..............when they were taking all the jobs......that Americans would not do anyway. Interesting that every wave of immigrants start being feared and despised or outright hated for threatening to take the jobs.......that Americans would not do anyway. That's been going on for hundreds of years now.

Not go there.........right.

Maybe, but looking at all the colleges and all........I'm not seeing anything that looks like "responsible", and plenty of "let's party"........although hope remains that they will wake up and be just like the preceding generations that were endlessly critical assigning blame for everything on their elders that did nothing but turn around and be endlessly critical of their "youngers". Maybe we can do more than actually hope and make any effort to work together on problems instead of just pointing fingers and blame.

My first job out of college was a "C" shift grocery warehouse supervisor. I had a crew of about 12 guys, two were janitorial. In the six months I was there I always had one bad apple in the group who tried to dodge work as much as possible. This wasn't always the same person, we would lose one and a new one would come on board. Aka about 10% of the work force.

This seemed to hold true most of my working career, in government, private industry and education. True slackers/con men (and women) were not that common. The work force breakdown was pretty much a bell curve. upper 10% got most of the real work done (mission critical) while the middle 80% muddled through with 1/2 causing as much damage/trouble as the other 1/2 fixed stuff that their colleagues were breaking. Since most of what this vast middle group was doing was not "mission critical" it didn't matter. It was necessary/grunt work. As a supervisor the challenge was to find a balance of devoting just as much time as necessary monitoring the flaming a-hole so they didn't get away with too much while making sure the rest of the crew was getting most of the work done as efficiently as possible.

Concentrating solely on the bad actor at the expense of the overall job/mission is not a realistic solution. Getting him fired/removed at the expense of the rest of the crew or possibly the company itself is meaningless. You are supposed to concentrate on winning the war, not a given battle. I would try to find tasks for the loser that were a) not mission critical and b) sh*t he really hated doing to keep him out of everyone's way. If he mouthed off or failed I could write him up and get rid of him. Most chose just to do enough to avoid that.

Things seem worse now because they are. People are being pushed into deciding whether to risk their lives for a paycheck or starve/become homeless to avoid getting sick, getting their family sick and//or possibly dying. They didn't ask for this pandemic. Everyone is having trouble finding the protective gear to deal with it. Wash your hands (assuming you can find soap), wear a a mask (assuming you can find/make one), keep six to eight feet apart (assuming that's possible given the circumstances) and don't congregate in groups greater than ten. A final admonition, don't let down your guard. This is a war with an enemy that is as relentless as it is mindless. It doesn't care what your political or religious beliefs are. It's not going away anytime soon. Adapt to the situation and survive or ignore and perish.

Sadly that message is going right over the heads of the people that need to near it and embrace it.

I was not complaining about professional immigrants, just stating an obvious reality. It's more of a "Thank God" we have people who want to work hard to make a difference, like it used to be in this country. The day is way past feeling any anger or animosity towards professional immigrants, I feel they will be our saviors. I don't want open borders, as that would only exacerbate our overpopulation problem IMHO.
