The people of Germany had to come to terms with the evil their recent ancestors had committed. Much worse evil than the Confederacy. It's time for the South and those who yearn for the world of the "Lost Cause" to do the same.

Change is painful, and confronting the evils of the past and present are difficult. But it's the only way to progress. Otherwise we would be sitting around our caves, debating whether rocks are edible :).

If conservatism is preserving that which is valuable, it's hard to see why preserving statues of those who fought for an unworthy cause is conservative. And defending police who are racist, cruel and homocidal seems anything but conservative.

Neil.
What all has to be removed to make liberals happy. :?:

John Oliver mocked Trump in 2017 for predicting removal of Washington, Jefferson statues
President Trump warned in 2017 that statues of U.S. Founding Fathers such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson might someday be removed -- three years ahead of attacks on such statues this month.

Back then, "Last Week Tonight" host John Oliver mocked the president for his grim prediction.

“So this week it's Robert E. Lee. I noticed that Stonewall Jackson is coming down,” Trump said at an August 2017 news conference on the protests that year in Charlottsville, Va., that sparked from the plans to remove some Confederate statues.

GEORGE WASHINGTON STATUE KNOCKED OVER IN PORTLAND, DRAPED IN US FLAG

“I wonder, is it George Washington next week? And is it Thomas Jefferson the week after? You really have to ask yourself, where does it stop?” Trump said.

George Washington Statue Toppled by Portland Protesters on the Eve of Juneteenth
https://news.yahoo.com/george-washingto ... news_index

Protesters tore down a statue of George Washington in Portland on Thursday night, where demonstrations against racism and police brutality have taken place for 22 consecutive days.

The statue was torn down on the eve of Juneteenth, a historic holiday celebrating the official end of slavery in the United States. A group of approximately twenty people gathered around the statue in the late evening, where some protesters wrapped the statue’s head in an American flag and lit on fire, according to multiple reports

Since the 1960s, essentially little has changed in the neighborhoods at the center of those long-ago urban riots. By current telling, they are about as poor, as crime-ridden, as under-educated and in poor health as they were when LBJ and the Dems. said they would change them. That means five decades of stagnation in America’s most marginalized places, all of it under Democratic—now “progressive”—political control.

The failure of the liberal model is by now so embarrassing that the current owners of that model have created an alternative universe of explanations, such as blaming it on American settlers in the early 17th century, statues and monuments, police, or the nonexistence of “justice.

Remember the liberal vision for America playing out every night on your TV screen; so called peaceful protest in the form of rioting, looting, robbing, burning down buildings, destroying monuments and businesses.

Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”― George Orwell, 1984

Bulls Eye! Well said!

I don't condone police violence and neither do you. But, trying to change history by rioting and destroying isn't the answer. Getting pretty spooky out there in America.

It's 155 years since the end of the firing of live rounds after the Civil War. If anyone thinks racism isn't still prevalent in our society and affecting the chances of success of black folk in our society, they are deluding only their selves. Segregation, red lining, underinvestment in cities are still major economic and political problems. We have made extraordinary progress. There are black doctors, lawyers, corporate officers but there is still only a relatively small black middle class. No one has the answer to how to fix that, and there is probably no one answer. But denying there is a problem or blaming it on liberals is pure and utter bullshit.

Other big problems created by white folk. Imprisoning black people for possession of drugs. Total rubbish. White people's favorite drugs, being tobacco and alcohol, are terribly addictive and dangerous, but entirely legal. You can kill someone while drunk in your car, and if you are white, wealthy and have a clean record, you can get away with no prison time. Possession of marijuana in the past could get someone years in jail if they were black, poor and had minor previous offenses. Which gets into the appalling record of police savagery and aggressive pursuit of these "crimes without victims" pushed by conservative Republicans, for the most part. Totally cruel and misguided.

And all this time I thought Joe Biden was a democrat. Didn't know he was a REPUBLICAN..

The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, now known as the 1994 crime law, was the result of years of work by Biden, who oversaw the Senate Judiciary Committee at the time, and other Democrats. It was an attempt to address a big issue in America at the time: Crime, particularly violent crime, had been rising for decades, starting in the 1960s but continuing, on and off, through the 1990s (in part due to the crack cocaine epidemic).

Politically, the legislation was also a chance for Democrats — including the recently elected president, Bill Clinton — to wrestle the issue of crime away from Republicans. Polling suggested Americans were very concerned about high crime back then.

Biden reveled in the politics of the 1994 law, bragging after it passed that “the liberal wing of the Democratic Party” was now for “60 new death penalties,” “70 enhanced penalties,” “100,000 cops,” and “125,000 new state prison cells.”

The law imposed tougher prison sentences at the federal level and encouraged states to do the same. It provided funds for states to build more prisons, aimed to fund 100,000 more cops, and backed grant programs that encouraged police officers to carry out more drug-related arrests — an escalation of the war on drugs.

I am writing about today not a quarter of a century ago. Law and order, making possession of poor people’s drugs of choice a criminal problem is almost exclusively a conservative Republican platform. Don’t tell me what Democrats did in 1994 as conservatives have their fifth cocktail while smoking a cigar in front of their grandchildren.

And I think the last legitimate liberal democrats died back in the 60s when they became progressive democrats. Those that weren't members of the KKK.

Take off your blinders Neil.

In a speech on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Washington, the former vice president acknowledged the detrimental impact of his approach to crime in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Biden helped write an infamous 1994 crime bill – the 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act. That bill is widely pointed to as one of the driving factors of mass incarceration in the US, as well as the disproportionate number of people of color who've ended up behind bars for drug-related crimes.

The democrats have had control of all the large cities where the major problems are today..

I am not in favor of policies just because they were favored by Democrats. Those were crappy policies then and they are crappy policies now, whoever favored them. One difference is Biden admits he was wrong, something Trump has never done in his entire life. What I see in November is a choice between a party led by a criminal, intellectually impaired liar, who is not only a traitor to our national interests and apologist for all that is dreadful in American society, but who is supported in part by the worst elements of our society. Not to mention his support from religious fanatics who would impose their medieval views on the rest of us regarding sexuality, abortion, separation of church and state and similar issues. On the other side are reasonably normal, decent people who would like to make things better for most Americans regardless of what entrenched interests want. That's not politics, it's the choice between blackest evil and, at worst, fallible mediocrity. Not a hard choice, nor a partisan one.

I don’t think this country can handle 4 years of biden or trump. Neither party will help anyone but their own.

Maybe Mrs. Obama can run and find, for herself, an actual second something of which she can be proud out of the entire history of the USA ?
