Clearly, they have had fun all along the way. They brought joy to their fans and were able to inspire many because they "did it their way."
Urban legend (literally) had it that Mr. Jagger frequented many late-night dance clubs in Manhattan, during their more halcyon days. In fact, I was present in a typical (and very, very popular) club, back in the early 70's, into which Mick Jagger visited one particular night. I was standing at the bar when he appeared coming up from behind. I saw him in the mirror which was an entire wall behind the display of liquors. By the time I could react and be sure it was he, and turned around, he was gone in-a-flash, which was, somehow, befitting his entire persona of that time frame, as well as a song or two of theirs. A song by some female artist allegedly about him wearing a particular "apricot scarf" and adoring himself had actually been playing, too. And he did have a diaphanous scarf loosely fitted around his neck, no less !
I never did any drugs, not even Grass, and rarely drank more than a few flutes of champagne, per evening, so I don't think the image of him being there was imagined in any sort of stupor, but its fleeting quality, so befitting him and the music of those times, saturated the whole experience with an imaginary quality. But I know what I saw.
Life is complicated.
And fun.
