I have a documentary on the problems with compound and articulated steam on the PRR, it describes the problems of the unequal pull of either set of drivers, as you can see on Jon's model, what was done is the first release of steam from the throttle went to the rear drivers, they had the most weight and were not as prone to slip, then the exaust from those cylindes went to the foward set, the steam not a volitile as when it was first released then was used again and the blown out the stack.they did this becouse the front set of wheels would be the first to hit frost,leaves,snow,weeds,or what ever and start spinning.
the large upper pipe that is just below the walkway that runs to the back cylinders comes right out of the dry pipe from the throttle, if you follow the lower pipe you can see it ties into the back side of the rear intake/exaust valve and leads to the foward set of valves.
positioning of the rods made no difference due to the fact that each set of drivers were ballanced as a set, the rods could be seen in any type of location although I agree with Tramp,they look pretty cool working together!

As things seem to crumble around us, I know only a few things. Beer tastes and feels good. I like being a cyberbo. I liked the tracks and tits. You get very few true friends; treasure them. D's pool game is getting freakin' special. March is almost over. There's more, but what the hell--I'm heading for another frosty pop like a swamp whippet to freedom.
I think the steam was used twice only on the compounds. Rear smaller cylinders got the steam first like you say and then it was routed to front to larger cylinders. Because heat energy was lost in the rear cylinders the steam going to the front was at a lower pressure. Thats why the front cylinders were larger. They tried to keep the force equal on the front and rear engines. Less pressure but more inches.
The engines pictured look to be all simple so steam from the rear was directed out the stack, not the front engine.
Mallets were a good idea but I think most were converted to simple by the 1920's
So, who makes a model with 8 chuffs?
