I was raised by my maternal grandparents in an age when the corner grocery store was still around. There were at least six within three small blocks of our house. When something was needed from the A&P super market uptown, @ one mile, the store person usually, depending on the weather, would walk
to the store and back if there were three large paper bags to carry home. If more than three, we would use the street car and/or the bus. The fare in town on either mode until at least my high school graduation was five cents. My grandfather and I usually walked so we could spend the two way fare on something else. That could buy a pack of cigarettes or two draft beers for most of that time.
Oh, we did not have a car because public transportation was so convenient. That is not so in that area today.

Those days are long gone now. We have shopping and stores about 2 miles from here and I've walked it more than once as getting my car serviced used to be just a bit further on the other side. Just have to cross 6 lanes of traffic at the light............

We used to have a folding sopping cart that could easily hold four paper grocery bags of stuff and we could walk around the corner to the market(s) when we lived in Queens. There was a meat market, a produce "stand", a general "grocery" store, and a bakery. When we moved up to Rockland county only the meat market and bakery were separate stores and the bakery didn't last long. Most of the shopping was done at the Grand Union or Safeway. You drove to and them you used the classic supermarket shopping cart to take the stuff out to the station wagon to drive the 2+ miles back to home.

I did find one o those old style two wheelers when I my daughter went off to college. We used it to move stuff in and out of her dorm room. Two wheels allowed me to drag the cart up the six flights of stairs whenever the elevator went out which was about 50% of the time. Still have the cart folded up in the basement just in case.

You may still have the cart, but the problem now is those stinking worthless plastic bags, which will likely snag when you try and remove them from the cart. I remember very well those independent crocery stores every few blocks! Had a store run by an elderly couple right close to the elementary school which sold only penny candy! Guess we are geezers, eh Roger!

Interesting, A&P was also the BIG store uptown. Now gone, but I still get Eight O'Clock coffee! Doesn't smell like it did coming out of the grinder! Let's see.....Eight O' Clock, Red Circle, and Bokar. They are all still around!

That was my job as a boy in the 50's, when we went grocery shopping at the A&P, to say, at the cashier , "One pound of Red Circle Coffee, drip-grind, please." I loved being engaged in my parents' business like that. Sometimes, they would send me on an errand to get it for them on my own. Loved that, too. I can still see the red machine and smell the fragrance emitted when the beans were ground.

The plastic bags aren't completely useless. We used them to take out spent cat litter (when we had cats) and now I have a small "stand" on the counter top where I use the bags for stuff that would smell up the kitchen if put in the regular garbage can, e.g. meat trays, vegetable waste, and stuff I don't want to put down the disposal. The little bags go out to the real garbage can in side yard on a daily basis.

I've been trying to remember to use the "permanent" bags to pick up the groceries. Those can easily hold the equivalent of two and sometimes three of the crap free bags. These are leak proof, have some insulation properties and include carrying straps. What they don't do well is interface with the scanner/scale at the checkout. The don't match the dumb as*d handles the store bags use and you have to keep telling the system you are using your own bag and getting it pre-weighed to not get into a fight with the check out security system. System needs work.

Grocery store up in PA that I frequent puts out stacks of card board boxes near the check out lanes - you go get boxes that you like and put you groceries in them as they ring them up. You get a convenient box that won't fall apart and the grocery store gets rid of its boxes.

So? It's a good store that we've used for 3 generations and they have awesome donuts from their in store bakery. Mennonites know how to bake!

Or simply one of the occasional large (30') sturgeons passing thru from the North Sea? Sturgeons can move from salt to fresh water when they wish to do so.
