Wow. I lived there, on-campus, for five years and still am not sure where I was. I do know there was corn, though. And levelness. And very interesting fossil-digs into Ordovician rock near Antioch.

Roger may want to add some enlightenment on this part referencing Ohio...? :D

I lived 10 miles southeast of Springfield from 1964-1969. I have been back to that area twice since that time and am about to return for a 50th year class reunion at the school where I taught and the town where I live. Murph is right, corn cows and flat land. @ 20 miles south of Springfield is Clifton Gorge
which is a real surprise among the flat land. Murph can tell about what he did there.
When we were in that area it was a very nice place to be in all respects except for winter weather. Springfield had most anything needed. Museums, ballet, symphony orchestra, large parks, large county fair grounds with attractions at fair time for almost anyone, hospitals, colleges and just about anything else. I don't remember any strip clubs.
It could all be different now.

Every time I have driven across Ohio, we were wondering how a state could possibly be so mind numbing dreary........

Did I mention the peacefulness of Ohio and it's very pleasant people ? And I very much appreciated how seriously its college campuses took academics. I needed that culture of study. However , I didn't need the culture of BEER. :( :? :P

I'm a rambling man. My "ancestral" home is middle Ohio, Galion, to be specific. Plus Ohio State grad*. Maternal ancestors were Swiss farmers arriving in the early-to-late 19th Century. Paternal great-grandfather was French Canadian, the rest of the line were farmers, too. As for me, born in Virginia, raised in Mississippi.
I've lived where I've lived as an adult chasing aerospace employment...North American in Columbus, GE in Philadelphia, TRW in LA.
As for CA...love the natural wonders. Where else can you go sledding in the mountains in December followed by surfing in the Pacific the same day? And not have to plow snow or fiddle with snow blowers, et al; and my cars don't rust out. Politics...not so much. But too damned old and unhealthy to pull up stakes.

*Tried unsuccessfully to get at least one of my eight grandchildren to go to OSU-including financial support. *sigh*

I'm first generation Californian. My parents and grandparents all came from Illinois.

Isn't it interesting how different and unique each state, or at least each region, differs from the others. For example, Arizona in contrast to Massachusetts ; California in contrast to just about everywhere (not that I'd know; I just go by what I've read and heard); Texas compared to Pennsylvania . On and on, we could go.
Right?

If I may ask, what inspired you to change your life like that and emigrate from the Midwest to California ?

Upon graduation from college, in the Midwest, I loaded my brand-new car with my books and suits, having every intention of making that same move westward, but turned left at the intersection to try NYC first, figuring I'd get to California next. Never made it. And yes, the decision was that arbitrary and cavalier .

Maybe I should have said second generation. I don't know how to account these things. Although I wasn't born here, I grew up here from age two. My parents both grew up in Illinois.

My grandfather likewise came to this country from Sweden as a child. I always figured he was a first generation American, but perhaps that distinction belongs more properly to his parents.

I googled "what does first generation mean?". These were the top results:

Multiple generations of a family often move together to a new place, so I'm inclined to figure everyone in such a family is a first generation whatever. So that, my grandparents, parents and I are all first generation Californians.

In Ohio we funnel people from the coasts through on the turnpike so we don't have to listen to their expressions of contempt while we build and grow things.
