You see, my wife and I have had a second-cousin (his siblings and he have always addressed us as "aunt" and "uncle") who began to get very involved in baseball when he was ten. He is twelve now. He has asked me if I thought he should lift weights to strengthen his arms, shoulders, and back. (Here he is at a recent get-together at his home.) I let myself answer that he might want to do push-ups or chin-ups, but weights require a whole set of cautions and rules and discipline, which I am not certain he possesses sufficiently for such an activity. That means I am worried he will hurt himself, like get a hernia. I had one when I was 8-ish, from trying to pick my mother up off her feet, straight up off the floor, which worked, but then I had to go to the hospital for repair. The scar is still there.

His parents trust every word out of my mouth, so I am very, very careful about what advice I give the children, of course.

Though that boy in that array of photos showing extremely (in my opinion) overly-developed bodies seems healthy, I am not at all aware if he has been harming himself with such profound accomplishment in musculature.

So, if our cousin gets into weight-lifting anywhere near how enthusiastically he has thrown himself into baseball, I am not sure what to advise him and his parents in this regard.

By asking about the kid in that photo array, I was hoping to get a perspective on what is too much and what is acceptable to let or encourage children of that age range to do to their bodies. I guess I am hoping that photo is a fake.

You are over-extrapolating - I don't give a damn about whether the photo is real or not; no more & no less - the level of fakery on the internet puts almost everything at a dubious level to the point that exerting myself to "care" simply is a waste of my time, energy, and resources.

Zero problem. I've gotten numb to all the fake photos except now and again to derive a good laugh. Most times, it's a bit of head scratcher and then I move on rapidly.

Direct him to a certified professional trainer. Probably too young anyway and will be counseled to stay with light weights at the most as his bones and body are still growing.

In today's news, it has been reported on the NYC/NJ area News that Mark Lampanello (sp?) has been arrested for carrying two 5gal. cans of gasoline into St Patrick's Cathedral, 5th Ave, NYC, last night, along with having two containers of lighter-fluid and two butane lighters. Some gasoline had spilled onto the floor. He was chased and apprehended as he tried to flee down 5th Ave.

It was subsequently discovered that he is the same man who was challenged last Monday night and arrested refusing to exit the Cathedral Basilica of The Sacred Heart, in Newark, NJ

(Maybe, this sort of info deserves being discussed in a thread entitled; WTF? ) (?)
