PG&E bankruptcy

Postby HONDO74 » Wed Jan 23, 2019 8:49 pm

This is an interesting read about the situation in California because of the fires that were possibly caused by PG&E power lines last year. I am just posting this as a FYI, not anything political.

I learned some interesting facts that I didn't know.

PG&E says judge’s wildfire safety plan would cost $75 billion, lead to huge rate hike

And Rufus it's not just about raking the leaves. The judge want's PG&E to remove thousands of trees.

Eventually it's nutz. We went through something similar in this area a few years back when we had massive multi-day outages and everyone blamed the power company for failing to be prepared and failing to clear trees, etc. They cut thousands of trees and then the same people complained about the trees being cut. You can't win.

What happens when they declare bankruptcy?

Maye one of the biotech companies out in SF bay area can breed up some giant termites that when they are done with the trees can be used to feed everyone.
The owls may indeed not be what they seem but still serve an imperative function: they remind us to look into the darkness.

Not as many environmentalists decry cutting trees as you'd think. People only casually observing news tend to hold the vocal, and often ignorant minority as representing the whole community. I've been working in various areas of the environmental field for about 30 years now and I can assure you that every stage of forest succession, from bare ground, through shrub stages, young and then climax forest is habitat to specific plant and animal species and all have value to the environment. Cutting forest and replacing it with commercial or residential development is another matter. A minority of armchair environmentalists unfortunately can't see the forest for the trees, which they forget are a renewable resource. Why is it the same alarmists aren't upset when a cornfield is "clearcut"? But here in NJ, fire suppression and lack of forestry practices, which can often mimic the effects of natural fire, have been the worst thing for our forests, resulting in dense, stagnated, fuel-loaded stands. New Jersey isn't the safest place to let natural fires run rampant however, with all the human development that has surrounded or fragmented the forest. Forest thinning, often heavy at times, can mimic the effect that those fires once had on areas like the pine barrens, which was originally shaped by frequent fire. This results in both a healthier and safer forest, and one that provides a more diverse habitat for wildlife species.

I've been up against the negative effects of years of the Smoky Bear campaign and animated children's movies that give the public the impression that every individual tree needs to be saved. Nature doesn't abide by human standards, and individuals of a species matter little in the greater scheme. A healthy population and its habitat are what are important to the success of each species.

And we can't agree on $5B to secure our southern border in some fashion that works.

From the article
The company also said Alsup’s tree-trimming program would force the removal of at least 100 million trees, which it called an enormous mistake. “Clear-cutting on such a drastic scale would have significant environmental consequences, including reducing watershed protection and increasing runoff, erosion and flooding,” PG&E’s lawyers wrote. They said Alsup is ignoring the extraordinary red tape involved in undertaking such a massive forestry program.

Alsup is supervising the utility’s probation term imposed in 2017 after PG&E was convicted of felony charges in connection with the 2010 natural gas pipeline disaster in San Bruno. Cal Fire has blamed PG&E equipment for a dozen of the 2017 wine country fires and is investigating whether a faulty transmission tower was the cause of the November Camp Fire, which killed 86 people and destroyed the town of Paradise in Butte County.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said border walls are "immoral." That's an interesting point,

“Freedom of movement is a basic human right,” argued George Mason University economist Alex Tabarrock in an Atlantic essay in 2015. “What moral theory justifies using wire, wall, and weapon to prevent people from moving to opportunity? What moral theory justifies using tools of exclusion to prevent people from exercising their right to vote with their feet?”

I suspect the author is a Libertarian.
Anyway, my argument is this: a population can decide that the territory it has settled is theirs and the population, as sovereign, can decide who, and under what conditions outsiders may enter and/or settle.

In the past the left was not necessarily against border security. I think we have moved to such a politically polarized environment that it is now a matter of being against something just because of the other side being for it. There is no middle ground or compromise anymore, on EITHER side, with both sides blaming the other for the stalemate.

I mentioned that very same idea to my wife last night, while watching more of the same on the shut-down. Why not put border security up for vote to the people and quickly. Don't let our representatives decide as they have to align with their party in many instances. Let the American people vote on this issue.

Also, I'm for throwing the owner of any small US company, who hires illegals, in jail and fines of $1M for each illegal caught working for large corporations. That will stop the BS and with no jobs here for illegals, the only thing we have to worry about is government offering funds, housing and support to illegals........which we do.

Tired of hearing we were all aliens at one time. Times have changed.

Maybe those 2 A-holes would like to volunteer to pay the bills for all that rabble. They should put detention centers right next to their residences and put about 30,000 in each. Give them "freedom of movement" to overrun their properties, and see how they liked it. They need some up close and personal exposure.

One is hard pressed to find anything moral about Ms. Pelosi
