Varney A-N 4-6-0 gearing

So, we did this long ago, but regularly scheduled purges and all that...
The 4-6-0 as delivered had no motor or gearbox.
The bottom plate is whacked out in a big rectangle, preventing installation of the gear bridge front screw.
The axle gear is small, 5/8" OD, straight gears (not pitched for a worm) and all the way over to one side.
Any ideas what this was for, and does anybody need it? Now excess to my collection.

I do not need it but it might make a nice flatcar load in one of the smaller scales or part of a scrap load in O. Note those "sheaves(?) on each end, I wonder if some kind of belting was involved?

Those are axle bearings. Fit into the frame. Axle spins in them. Drivers screw onto the ends of the axle.

If you look at the other photos of "proper" gearing (i.e. original) you can see the vast diameter disparity.
And positional discrepancy upon said axle.

I know a guy, ended up with piles of three speed transmission gears...first, second, reverse...and laid them around his #1 gauge outdoor logging railroad, half buried in the dirt!

Looks like a USH gearbox setup. My dim memory says that maybe Babbitt tried that before going to NWSL.

Tell you what - I may have more of this stuff laying around. Any surplus will get in a care package.

If you look closely at the photos of the gear...specifically second, far side of axle and bearing...you will see a flat upon the collar on one side (happens to be reversed, I think).

I have one unit without flats filed in bearing collars, and tighten up bottom cover screws, locks up tight.

Seems to rock the bearing down (when inverted) on the inside.

Just went through Atlantic instructions, saw no place where that bearing is instructed to be filed.

Correct?
