Better late than never!!! Coming at you from Roanoke, VA currently

I've only been home 1 day out of the last 10, so I didn't do anything on the layout, but I did snap a few shots before I left.
Little bonus of this trip is that I got to stop by Strasburg, PA. I purchased a few scenery items for the layout while I was up there

NS SD70M-2 2698 leads Linwood bound 134 through Reidsville, NC on the Danville District


Seen through a 20mm lens, N&W 611 backs through the wye in Roanoke as she prepares to complete her journey from Spencer, NC to the VMT


NS ES44DC 7695 is about to knock down the signals at MP 131 as it leads 14G through Newport, PA.


Amtrak P42 85 ducks under the soon to fall PRR signals at MP 225 on the Pittsburgh Line as it hustles the eastbound Pennsylvanian toward Harrisburg.


NS GP38-3 5808 (ex NS GP50 NS 7063) is seen leading P43 off the main at Gastonia, NC


During my travels last week, I was lucky enough to catch NS ET44AC 3644 leading 10G through CP-C at East Conemaugh, PA with a pair of special SD70ACC engines in tow. The NS 1800/1801 were on their way back to Altoona for some work.



NS ES44AC 8164 leads an early morning 18M through Northfork, WV on the Pokey.


NS SD70ACe 1128 leads westbound 21E under the PRR signals at Summerhill, PA


NS Dash-9 9768 leads a northbound freight through the cuts in downtown Gastonia, NC on the Piedmont division


Also got to visit w/ a few cows this week at some farms while I was up in PA

What and why are the yellow cab NS locos?

You have removed the old tunnel from the layout. Why?

The loco's are rebuilds of DC motored systems to AC. They have been painted in Yellow, Red, Black and Blue nose schemes with the horses mane saw tooth pattern and an overall grey primer background.

I like this better than the old black and white scheme but why are they changing or is this just a few or will more be done?
Why are they trying four colors? Will the grey be changed also?

No idea about whether this will be carried over to the rest of the fleet. Impression I got from the research was these made it easier to ID these conversions from the other loco's. It looks like they were being done in pairs. The process seem to have been started about two years ago. All of them were former DC traction motors and they are rebuilt to AC standards. The current main fleet all black is kind of somber. It is "elegant" but also very somber, kind of like a funeral motif.

Cow 1031 was SUPER friendly! She came up & was licking me & wanted me to scratch her head
I actually stopped by a few farms. There's one in Shippensburg called 'The Family Cow' where you can actually walk around & tour the farm. I snapped a ton of pics, as my youngest daughter is obsessed with cows

The yellow cab NS engines are SD70ACC units. They were rebuilt from standard cab SD70 DC units. The first 2 were painted yellow as a nod to Caterpillar, who did a lot of the rebuild work. The rest should be in the regular NS scheme.

When I reconfigured some things on the layout, I needed to have the tunnel on a curve, if I wanted to keep one. The prewar tunnel was too short & I couldn't get it to fit correctly on that curve w/o stuff hitting it. I'd still like to use it one day, just doesn't look like it will be on this layout.
