Re: Whatzit?
Given the immediate and broader environment , is it associated with fire prevention and control, like maybe a spot where a fire-tower used to stand?
Re: Whatzit?
Good thought Murph. Maybe the cover for a rainwater cistern used for firefighting?

Your posts here on MTJ are kept on a server. There are bulletin boards that allow posting from your machine, but if you're offline, your pictures can't be displayed. The MTJ account includes a fairly small amount of space, for attachments.
MurphOnMillerAve wrote:I think Chuck may have hit on something with his mentioning my manipulating - editing - some of the photos I have used for the Whatzit images. That may be the reason some images are not allowed.
I see that all your Whatzit images are hosted by the MTJ attachment allowance. I recognize uploading pictures, etc. is no one's favorite thing to do, but if the image is hosted on Flickr or one of the other image hosting sites, it doesn't count against the MTJ attachment limit.
Who is hosting your layout photos, and your personal photos that you post here from time to time?

Re: Whatzit?
No, nothing to do with fire protection.
Note the no parking sign on the left? We're on a stretch of road, an important road. There are about 20 more of these in this area that is named for this gentleman:

One of is nicknames was "the bishop", not because if his pious behavior but because of his "colorful" language. He has the distinction of having two of these "locations" named after himself, one in the US, the other in Canada. This was not an honor or "accident". It was part of his contract for discovering them. This information is only a clue to where the picture comes from and that should lead to why the disks exist.

Doesn't store anything. Something gets "parked" on top of the disk.

Re: Whatzit?
I know the man's name. I sold a cabinet card of him. Got a good amount for it also. After looking through my ebay records i found his name. As for the markers i have no real clue. Knowing what he did i can only guess as to what they are. A directional marker. Placed by. A.B R. My photo was from Ingalls in Missoula MT. I have no dathe was a surve for the photo in my record. Only notes i have say ." he was a surveyor for C.P. & G.N.
I spend entirely too many hours a day tying my shoes
Re: Whatzit?
Yes, that's the dude, quite a character, Albert Bowman Rogers. The disks are not survey markers, they were installed much later, long after he was dead. This is the Canadian site, not the one in Montana.
Rogers Pass is home to the largest mobile avalanche control program in the world.[citation needed] Parks Canada and the Department of National Defence work together to keep the pass safe for traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway and the Canadian Pacific Railway mainline.

All right Roger. We have determined the flying saucer landing pads are located in Roger's Pass in Canada and Montana. They are your passes. Do you have any photos of the flying saucers on the pads? Were you abducted at the two sites? Tell us more.

Re: Whatzit?

Those are 105mm howitzers. The Canadiens have a completely different definition of a "snow gun".
We saw the pads from the Rocky Mountaineer. I thought they were helicopter landing pads for airlifting casualties from serious accidents. I didn't have a map/Google Earth to reference or I would have realized how remote these areas are. The nearest community is 20 miles away by ballistic missile (I don't think the crows can get that high) but more like 40-45 miles if you have to follow the passes through the valleys. I suspect that if you have serious accident that the grizzlies and wolves will get to you way before any EMS team does.

Are they firing in order to cause a controlled avalanche?

They are for shooting at flying saucers? Dangerous place to fire loud canons--might cause an avalanche.
