Lobaugh drivers?

I should be the last guy to ask: thinking about a very high drivered Pacific. Need one axle worth of Lobaugh 84" spoked - either heavy or light counterweight. Would not turn down a medium. Check your junk box?

Bob, any chance you could post photos? I have a accumulated a few random drivers but have no idea how to tell a Lobaugh from most any other.

Unless they've been worked on, Lobaughs are the ones that wobble and are out-of-round.

The only cast iron drivers that are "true" right off the bat are Lobaugh, so long as the keys are trimmed to fit. Here is a photo of what I have:

Note the 81" driver - I can use it, if nobody has a lonely Lobaugh axle pair. I would just make two new tires. You can see an ever so slight difference in the casting. I am just being lazy, and hoping to find a genuine Lobaugh mate.

The Lobaugh range from 1.765 to 1.78 in diameter over the tread. That kind of variance is not unusual, although I prefer them to be a bit closer. Crank pin throw is identical between the Lobaugh and Pearce - not always so fortuitous.

Just for kicks - in 17/64 scale the large Lobaugh drivers scale out to a hair over 80". The Pearce pair scales out to 77" - just right for a Harriman Light Pacific.

Also note the key ways - 45 degrees on Lobaugh, zero on the Pearce. Pearce had to cut the axles at 90 degrees.

Valiant attempt to drag your carcass outta bed at a reasonable hour.....but you still stayed in bed for almost two hours after I put that up.

So after not trying any harder than that, I went through my spare driver tires and found exactly two that matched the 84” Lobaugh. Yesterday I cut the Pearce drivers, insulated one, and matched the set.

Figuring I was on a roll, I found four tires close to the Scale Craft Pacific, and converted a spare K4 mechanism to 2-rail, all flanged. Went a lot quicker than I remembered.

Most of the reason for this update: I ran out of green Loctite, and used red. Red is temporary, for screw threads - but so far, it looks like my driver tires will not soon fall off. I am surprised - I tried to move one tire with some shear force, and it wouldn’t budge. Gotta get some green or blue for the next step - quartering.

Unless Loctite changed their color chart Red is permanent and can only be removed with heating from a blow torch.
