Yes! Exactly, HONDO. Thanks for providing that wonderful link.

There may still be a popular diner on the lower Westside of Manhattan, around 14th Street, near that elevated former RR track, now a park, but numerous diners that were popular spots for neighborhood smoozing and political get-togethers are gone from a lot of cities; at least, that is my (limited) impression. If I see any still operating, I'll take cellphone-photos and post them here.

In the Pittsburgh area, diners of the 40's and 50's seemed positioned to serve the millworkers going to and from work in the steel mills, but since the mills are all gone, I'd imagine the diners went also.

There was a popular diner, in NJ, right up until recently (behind my former students in this photo,) where folks "in the know" patronized, especially on Saturday mornings, regularly. However, it was purchased lock-stock-and-barrel and moved, intact, elsewhere, as an historical artifact.

Certainly, diners became a part of historical Americana. Maybe, Rufus will find an old postcard with a diner featured (?)

They never left. And, in some cases they are simply being re-invented into small places in strip malls that you just have to know about to go to.....

Excellent point. In fact, my wife and I just recently discovered one and patronized it for the first time this past Sunday. My wife and our guest, our pastor, liked it very much. I found it quaint and eager to serve, but my chicken was tough. But I digress (what else is "new"? ). It was a "find" for us and had a dressed-up sort of "diner-car" feel to it.

How about the "Shoe-Fitting Fluoroscope".... anyone remember them.? You could see your feet inside the shoes you tried on to see if they fit. Turns out these machine were hazardous to our health.

Thanks, Hondo74. I remember playing that 45 at 78, all the time! I think the player may have been Lionel Spear, not Lionel Porter.

I stuck my boy feet into them many times and enjoyed watching my toes wiggle. Sometimes, even when not in the market for shoes, my fellow rascals and I would rush into a shoe store and jump on the contraptions just to see what we could see.

I remember the shoe fitting machine and we did the same thing Murph and his friends did.

I learned, today, in the News, that those red phonebooths in England are all being removed or re-purposed, with some of them being reconstituted as small other-purposed "shops" and bookclub drop-offs, etc. Wow. Times are certainly a-changing, but I somehow never thought I'd see those icons eliminated from that scene.

Is it expected that California will actually divide itself into three states? And if so, in addition to a plebiscite or referendum, wouldn't they need Federal permission?

Murph,
Why would they do that? Wouldn't that divide their political power?

They already have configured which square areas of land and population would be designated where, dividing up the entire state. It surprised me when I saw it detailed in the News.

Absolutely congressional approval is required.

Article IV of the U.S. Constitution discusses the process for admitting new states to the federal union. Section 3 of Article IV provides:

New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress of the United States.

If the Congress approves a measure to create a new state, the measure would be presented to the President of the United States for approval or veto. In the event of a veto, the measure may be approved over the President’s objections with a two-thirds vote of the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives.
