The reason I put Parental in this is because when/if you read the article, "To ensure the punishment is harsh enough, he’s even making students’ families responsible for the over $1,000 it costs his office to investigate false threats."

I know that in my neck of the woods they are taking a very serious approach to school shooting and several student have been arrested and are in detention and have had their resident searched and weapons confiscated.

Parents give their kids cell phones and computers and don't have a clue what the kids are up to. This is not a total solution but a least it is a good start to be more aware of what these kids are doing.

I'm not sure I follow that reasoning. Billing them for stuff that wasn't real seems a great way to fund retirement accounts for lawyers.

I think that was the point. Since it takes just as much $$$ to investigate a false threat as a real one, maybe if the threat turns out to be false/fabricated, the parents of the fabricator need to pay that $1000.

Parents have to be responsible for what their underage kids are doing instead of being so detached they are clueless.

What about the kids that are harassed/bullied into suicide. Someone needs to be responsible there as well.

This sh*t just didn't happen when I was growing up, so it's hard to fully understand it. In my day, if someone was being harassed/bullied and couldn't do something about it, for whatever reason, they generally had a friend or a friend of a friend who could take care of the bully. Of course there were no knives or guns, it was strictly fists.

I think that was the point. Since it takes just as much $$$ to investigate a false threat as a real one, maybe if the threat turns out to be false/fabricated, the parents of the fabricator need to pay that $1000.

Actually, I'd think it costs more for a real threat investigation since that would be carried through to the endpoint. Might also depend on the source of the false threat; who's really trustworthy? Seems the standard today is to just make stuff - what's real? What's not? I can see the police getting billed for damages incurred caused by their actions.

Assigning blame and responsibility can be tricky - you get lawyers and politicians involved......

Yeah, I'm not impressed with the modern approach to bullies. In my time, you learned how to kick asss. Then, the next time someone messed with you, you'd kick their asss - even if you got yours kicked worse. The main thing is, you lost your fear of asss-kickery.

Unless they're planning a demolition derby event in the parking lot it's pretty unlikely. We don't even have sidewalks coming up to the high school complex (three schools on a one square mile plot). I have to route around the traffic in the morning to get to work. Either it's the kids driving (80%) or Mom or Dad (maybe 3%) and the balance are on school buses.

True, but almost all of them(schools) have increased security regarding pickup and drop off. A lot of this goes back to issues with custodial interference and/or abuse in general. In many cases even the kids taking the bus are monitored until they get on the bus. The parents doing pickups are routed like they're waiting to use the drive through lanes at the bank. I don't mind any of this, if it keeps people safe an limits stupid driving stunts, fine.

Re this didn't use to happen, yes it did, we just didn't know about most of it. If it was extraordinarily bad it might have made the national news or picked up by UPI or the AP. There was a lot of pressure to keep these kind of events under wraps. Locals wouldn't want the word getting out that the town was a bad place to live.

There is a good chance that the infrastructure around here was set up for other reasons (probably weather related) and that it was then adapted for these other issues. I live in a suburb that is between Ann Arbor and Metro Detroit. The demographics and geography also play a part. I will say that the number of unattended kids walking home from the elementary school behind our sub is way, way down. I checked the enrollment and that's about the same as when my kids were there 30 years ago. World is changing!
