Door stop era cab forward ... built by ???

Hello all door stop fans ....

Cab forwards were never beauty queens ..and this one will not violate the stereotype ... it's beauty factor was diminished by exceptionally poor packing and a few gravity tests whilst in transit.

Outside 3rd rail , manual reverse conveniently sticking out the front of the cab with easy access for the engineer to reach out and throw ......cast frame with built up sheet brass body ....all drivers drive thanks to a drive shaft to rear set ......nice brass tender ...with a few casting bits ...

Does anyone recognize the drive ? ... enclosed gear cases ... ...it is going to need a bit of TLC ... .....sorry if it is hard on the eyes ..

4018 is an MC-4, converted to AC-2, 2-8-8-2, inside lead truck bearings on 2 wheel lead, outside on other class 4 wheel lead.

It is a caricature of an AM-2 - Articulated Mogul. Dave is right - the 4000s were ACs - Articulated Consolidations. The prototype for this one was rebuilt from an MM-2 - all of which were converted to 4-6-6-2s in 1912.

The mechanisms look salvageable. Not sure about the boiler. Stevenson has better domes. The tender underframe may be on backwards - the oil tank is short, and is front.

OSR had a photo of a delightful example of this model - I will look for it. I have a model of the MM-2 with four wheel lead truck. Cab is dramatically different.

Even as beat up as it is, I like stuff like this. The price better be right, but hey if Carey didn't save it, it would be doomed to a final resting place in the dump! No (or not many) old trains deserve that!

MM-2 - note the larger low pressure cylinders and square cab. Those giant pipes were not on all the Mallet Moguls, and not on all the AM conversions either. Domes and placement vary, but never like Carey's new addition. I would salvage many parts, but not some of the bigger ones.

Dave sorry about the keyboard ...send it out and I'll put it in the dishwasher along with the cab forward ..for a cleaning ..she'll be right as rain ..

Bob and Dave thank you for posting photos / links of how the engine should have looked .... safe to say the builder took "artist" (?) license whilst soldering ...

Maybe. But, usefulness of said chassis/drives in repair or rebuild of an original loco they were designed for is going to be difficult. The builder hogged out at least one tailbeam..badly...not even sure of the thickness...and probably the nose of one and tail of the other whacked off.

Yes, I have seen these peculiar castings before. I kind of disagree with Dave - the mechanisms are salvageable for an AM-2. I would cut those ugly spring valances off, and re-do the Walschaerts links. Also put NWSL gears in unless this thing runs perfectly.

The boiler itself might be salvageable if it is straight and true. I would strip it, and if going to NWSL, I would stitch up the belly. Boiler bands, new running boards, cab, domes, and appurtenances will go a long way.

The tender has some doorstoppiness value - I would just turn it around and adjust a few details. Depends on the underframe.

But it is just as much work for me to start from zero. I like the way those drivers look, but I think I would cut new frames and set it up so it could be easily sprung by those who think sprung drivers are a big deal.

So, sure. At the right price, I would have captured and stripped it.
