Thread Drift

I'm guilty of thread drift, and of advocating for thread drift. But, I do hate to see certain threads, with ongoing themes, destroyed by thoughtless or excessive drift. It's one thing if someone starts a thread to answer a very specific question, and the question is answered to the satisfaction of the original poster. Then, I don't see how drift would hurt anything.

I would offer the observation that a thread is like a conversation among folks present in a room (sans facial expressions and vocal tone). It is not quite like a club meeting wherein participants are expected to raise a hand to make a pertinent point on the motion or subject at-hand. Motions are made or declined, etc.

However, a conversation continues if folks are interested and, unlike at a formal meeting, it continues if it holds interest. I think threads are conversations, not formal meetings.

Conversations often increase in interest if they proceed in a variety of tangent interests.
Well-meaning participants, all being adults, can sense and realize when things are going "too far" off-center. Yet, what is the harm of some wandering around?

Therefore, to me, some drift is natural and welcome, even comfortable, but usually there is a voice that brings us back to focus .

I'm inclined to agree that these message boards are more like house parties and not like meetings subject to Robert's Rules of Order. However, there are threads that are devoted to model builds and other specific topics, and I certainly don't want to do any harm to such threads.

I have heard that the producers of that television show went through so many of those chargers that the price on the open market increased due to the alarming reduction in the available models.
