Athearn Freight Truck bolsters

Postby ScaleCraft » Thu Aug 03, 2017 6:57 pm

So...I have a fair amount of these in boxes....all with apparently the same bolsters...and all exploded or broken.
At least I think they're Athearns.
Sideframes seem to be different material (or better "batch") so mostly they are Okay.

Is there a source on replacement bolsters, even plastic ones, to fox these before I just pitch them all?

Dave

How many do you need? Do you prefer metal?

No...don't prefer metal, especially the original Zamac! I remember when I could walk into the local hobby shop and buy a bag full of new Delrin Athearn trucks. So, no don't mind.
Cost is a question only...and probably 20, but I'd have to dig out boxes to figure out exactly...but 20 should be MORE than I need. Heck, 10 would get me going and then I could find out how many more.

Dave I have them in white metal (threw away all the crappy ones), plastic and brass. How about if I just load up a small flat rate box with bolsters and other associated Athearn truck parts?

I don't know if I still have your address. How about emailing me with it?

You should sell them. The metal Athearns are still among the most accurate, but the ears break off the bolsters. The springs then hold the truck together. I made bolsters out of steel in the olden days.

The All Nation Bettendorfs were asymmetrical, although you have to look to see it.

Pretty sure that entire assembled trucks are still available, but parts are tough. I keep every leftover part that for these sorted away just in case...

I 'll hae to look to see if I have car bolsters - I was going to cast these once upon a time and never got that done.

Dave didn't say anything about car bolsters, just trucks. I have them but haven't heard from him so I put them back in storage (my future estate sale?).

I would be happy to buy several sets of brass.

The last time I tried to send an e-mail from this forum, first I never got the "sent" copy, and it took three tries until it worked. We'll see how it goes this time.
Been a bit hectic around here.
94-96, with last couple of days VERY high humidity due to Canadian Smoke overcast...maybe one mile visibility. Running around keeping the the portable AC units doing their job, plus fans, and hiding out in the cool basement.
I can't even work in the shop due to NO AC out there..five minutes and I'm done.

Bob,

Dave doesn't want the brass bolsters. You can have them.

Dave,
Are the weather situations out your way as dire as reported on TV news?
Our summer so far, IMO, has been typical.

Pretty rough, and the canadians don't help.
Today was a break..83. All this coming week is 90 or more. Around here, that's a lot with the water nearby and humidity.
Not your "dry heat".
