Ernie Kovacs was a big favorite and as a music teacher the song was hilarious.
The drummer ape is typical of school age drummers. :D

You've got something there. I can see the truth/accuracy of it, esp. regarding drummers! :D

The drummer in those skits was sometimes played by big name celebrities. (Frank Sinatra and Jack Lemmon among others.) The center gorilla was Kovacs and the keyboard player was mostly Edie Adams.

What I really liked was the solfeg words that were sung.
If I remember, they were wrong which, to me, made it even better.

I miss the comic minds of Kovacs, Skelton, Mel Brooks, The Marx Brothers, W.C.Fields, Buster Keaton and I'm sure I have missed some.
I especially liked their comedy that (usually) didn't hurt anyone. Also Laurel & Hardy. I think these all participated in physical comedy that
had its oral elements. IMHO Johnny Carson along with Don Rickles and Bob Newhart were great oral comedians but did little physical comedy.
I know I have missed some.

I never found Red Skelton the slightest bit funny, not when I was a boy and not later as an adult . I know he thought he was funny and adorable. I found his "golly-gee; aw-shucks" expressions and characters the total opposite of funny = nauseating.
Shocking, I know, esp. since my mother howled with laughter at his antics. :( Oh well. Everybody is different, huh . I can still see that big dumbass grin/smile, esp. when he was Clem Kadiddlehopper. Oivey. Ya' can't unthink that stuff. :?

Interesting, Murph. Our household was never fans of Red Skelton, either. Also, not fans of British humor*. Must have been something lacking in our early education...or a genetic defect.

*many friends and a couple of misguided children are big fans of Monty Python...

To me, Monty was another alleged-comedian who felt he was funny but to me was just odd. However, I did find a couple of his expressions were memorable.

To some extent I agree with you guys...I always kinda thought Skelton was a clown, i.e. visual comic much like Buster Keaton, that tried but failed to make the transition to stand-up.

You are perhaps aware that Monty Python was a troupe of 6 individuals that specialized in sketch comedy :?:

He was very much the clown originating from the vaudeville stage and not a stand-up comedian at all.

Wasn't Monty the lead guy, that character, for example, who yelled from the parapets down at the attacking forces, "I fart in your general direction!" ?

No. Just 1 of the 6....although some were more prominent in the writing than others. John Cleese, oddly enough doing an outrageous French accent was up on the parapet while also portraying one of the English knights. Graham Chapman, I believe died a few years ago. He also played King Arthur in the same movie, "Holy Grail". That movie was curiously funded by several bands with a substantial amount put up by George Harrison who thought so well of the effort as to take out a mortgage on his home to raise the money

Terry Gilliam rarely appeared in their TV show and was the animator who went on to make quite a few rather good movies. I would heartily recommend "Brazil" for anyone that has had a seat at desk in a cubical and has worked for any bureaucracy of any size.

Gilliam did appear in some of the sketches, he was one of the Cardinals in the Spanish Inquisition sketches. Brazil was awesome but I think my favorite Gilliam film is Time Bandits.

I never understood (or liked) Benny Hill but I really did enjoy most of the Python sketches. The more absurd, the better.

"Hell's Grannies", "How not to be seen", "Dead Parrot", "SPAM"

BTW, Graham Chapman, aka King Arthur, graduated from medical school.

Love Mel Brooks. Young Frankenstein (with Marty Feldman as "Eyegore") and Blazing Saddles are two of my favorite comedies. Some of his later works have drifted into the potty mouthed/shock humor that is not very clever or funny.

George Carlin and Steve Martin could walk the tight rope between clever word play and just being gross, e.g. the standup routine on farting "we're getting our own section on airplanes". I was never a big fan of the Seinfeld TV show but I love his stand up work.

I miss Jonathan Winters, Robin Williams, Burns and Allen, Steve Allen

Yes, he was Cardinal Fang?

Time Bandits is actually rather good - one of those few movies that I own a copy of to enjoy on those very dark days.....
