For steam heat it would need to be next to the loco and all locos did not have steam lines.

As I understand it Roger, the steam heating tubes were to facilitate movement of the load. They were hooked up prior to unloading, not used during train movements. When fueling a ship with No 5 or No 6, you have to heat the oil to get it to move, otherwise you're attempting to pump tar down a pipe. On the ships when I was in the Navy, pretty much every tank had steam heating and you would warm the tanks contents up using hotel services steam before pumping or recirculating the contents.

Steam lines off a local source would be used; not from the train or engines

Adding to Tom's bit, on the MSC ships I worked we would most often have one of the tanks filled with diesel. Unlike a combatant ship, they would lay up cold periodically until needed. Then, we could fire from cold with diesel, make steam, and reheat the bunker oil in the other tanks.

On tank cars, heavy oil wasn't the only thing carried in steam heated tanks. One plant we served back in the 70s was a factory that made candles for churches. The wax was delivered in insulated tanks by then, no baffles, but the steam hookups were still in place and operational.

Every jan. 15th my history teacher in high school would bring in molasses cookies. He was a great guy that only i liked. He was hard to deal with as a teacher. Teaching took a toll on him.He became a drunk. His life stories were great. After college he became a geologist for a large oil company. By the 10th years of living abroad he packed it in. He always claimed that he sailed home with 2 coworkers. every now and then he would show some 8mm movies of what looked like a long ocean voyage. His first class at CB.high school was my mothers class. Some 18-20 years later i had him. When i told him my mothers name his first words were "does you grandmother still make rhubarb pie?" Yes sir. just not in the fall. Then he says "Does she still make shrimp pie?" Yes she does. "Can i get one?" " I have waited almost 20 years for another taste of it." When i pointed out that her driveway was across from from his class window he almost fainted. His stories were better then what he was forced to teach by the powers to be.
Ps. shrimp pie is nasty.

Yeah, but I don't see it in person - the light and camera caught it though - the camera is a harsh and indifferent critic

That's one of the advantages of getting old and failing eyesight. The camera always shows things we don't see.....damned things.

Your ever untangle your light bulb collection?

That was not an issue......although I might wish I had that as an excuse.

Recently I asked what or who Rufus is now. At the time it looked like something weird crawling out of slime but I couldn't tell for sure because of my eyes.
Then I guess my eyes woke up and I could then see that it was one of his old clown friends. I haven't driven after dark for at least six months.
