Interesting if you search for 17/64s model trains on Wikipedia they have nothing, one poster even stated that Minton Cronkite built the original Chicago SF exhibit with outside 3rd rail , I guess all the "experts" are chiming in now.

Back to Pacifics - I am going to refrain from putting that ugly AN boiler on a Mike mech - it is just as ugly as the Pacific, except spoked drivers. It really, really needs a new sand dome. Someday. Herewith:

This is a Harriman Heavy in 17/64. It needs a new tender, and I have the sides all pressed out. Not sure what I am waiting for - the thing is elegant, and rests on Lobaugh 84" drivers, machined here from rough castings. The usual NWSL/Pittman, and it runs like a dream. I made a boiler for Harmon, and I think another one for someone else. A quarter century ago?

I'm sure it's "accurate", but that big 12-wheeled tender just looks too modern for the engine.

No - the locomotive is a UP P-77 in 17/64. Tender is a 1/4" scale Adams SP 160-C. A mis- match. I will get to it.

Hello Pacific admirers .

Thank you for posting all the nice photos of vintage engines .

My favorite ( and only) Pacific ( thus far) is the Scalecraft K4 ... did this come out in 1933 or 34 ? Undated flyer ..clearly states this is their first engine to be offered...but then it states 1/4 scale .... it is mighty big for 1/4" ..my bet is on 17/64ths....the K4 towers over their Hudson ..but same size /scale as a Congress Hudson. So there may be a few flaws in the description... but the rivet-less tender and headlight the size of a 55 gallon drum are spot on , also charming ( in my taste) ... let alone the cat whiskers pick up for the outside 3rd rail.
It is amazingly accurate the Johnson bar is ..as steam engines always seem to have a favored direction ....the K4 's is reverse , about twice the speed as forward.
One day looking forward to having more than a 6' mainline , till then back and forth and back and forth ....

Like your third rail support chairs...simple, gets-the-job done in a no-nonsense fashion.
Can't tell, but is the third rail actually a rail, or a piece of brass bar?

I have 2 outside-third rail locomotives (that I know of!) that I am in the process
of converting back to two rail. The previous owner ran outside-third rail to the
bitter end, and had converted several two-rail locomotives to run on his system,
including a Weaver RS-2.
