Re: Favorite Movies
It was very good. The later re-make of the Thing actually followed the original story better.
I think it was "Who Goes There?" by John Campbell, long time editor of Astounding Analog magazine.

Yup! That's the story - one of the classics from one of the best.

Both were great fun. One could feel the cold and the isolation.

The 1951 version or 1982, or 2011 version? Pretty good original story -- that's what really makes an SF movie - a story that provokes thought.
I was fortunate as a wee lad to see the 1951 version when it came out. My first SF film. Couldn't sleep alone for the next several nights. Saw it again a few years ago and was surprised to see how well it held up.Shows you don't need spec effects if the script is good and the actors aren't hams.
ctually, with SF I think that well done special effects add value and put the story into better context - The Thing wasn't shot in the Antarctic, and 2001 was a huge step forward, and then Bladerunner with all the backdrop behind another great story transformed to film....
Bladerunner stands alone as maybe the greatest-ever SF flm. My son agrees..![]()

I tend to agree. And, it has held up very well unlike many of the other "greats" that it now eclipses.

I was speaking of the James Arness version of The Thing.
The Kurt Russell version was also good.
I also like the Vin Diesel "Riddick" movies, three I think so far.

An interesting anti-hero series of movies...

Re: Favorite Movies
As I'm recovering from the flu, having nothing better to do, today , I watched most of "San Francisco," featuring Clark Gable and Jeanette MacDonald. I was able to get past all the seemingly endless prancing about by one preening diva after another (apparently the fashion in circa1937 movies) , as well as the screech-singing by Jeanette, all for the sake of seeing the earthquake and post-quake fire. The rupture of water-main and gas pipes seemed to exasperate the whole disaster . I felt sorry for everybody who had to endure that on real life there.
It made we wonder about how the city would make it through an earthquake nowadays, esp. as one would affect the same plumbing.
