Kung-Fu Panda
There are things known and there are things unknown, and in between are the doors of perception.

Night of the Hunter. Mitchum at his scariest.
Plan 9 from Outer Space. IMHO one of the funniest movies of all time.

Re: Favorite Movies
We cut back on our attendance at movies in brick-n-mortar movie houses , due to a reputation in some (many? Several?) locations for being flea-bitten , take-a-bedbug-home-with-you establishments. Anybody else have this impression?
Re: Favorite Movies
The last time I went to a movie theatre was to see the movie of "Phantom of the Opera" but I don't remember when that was.
I have not heard complaints of that type in this area. The southeast Georgia roaches probably eat the other bugs for lunch.
Except mosquitoes and gnats.
Murph,
Please use your teaching ability and tell me, is it southeast Georgia or Southeast Georgia?

If you're not frightened by sentiment and can take a bit of science fiction with it, this movie has one heck of a realistic looking alien, sparingly and strategically presented, and the M. Night Shyamalan atmosphere he does so well . IMHO

If you want aliens, how about: Predator

Loved it! Couldn't get enough. The whole concept of the alien, with its body-heat vision, and its whole fantastic range of vocalizations (even laughter, just before the wrist-bomb blew), extraterrestrial body and head ! Cool. Cool. Cool. I even appreciated the thud sound he made when he jumped on the log-bridge Dutch held onto.
Re: Favorite Movies
The "Predator" alien is probably one of the best aliens. The "Alien" aliens are also very good.

Definitely. I think that Alien may be my most favorite ever. And who can forget its entrance via that scientist's chest during lunch? We never saw anything like that before! And then when it grew up (so fast!) , the cat in the storage room was right - wherethehump can ya hide!????!!!! A mouth inside a mouth??!!!! Slurp. Drool. Puncture. Death.
Re: Favorite Movies
I still think the old movies where you never really saw the vampires bite or the monsters death blow were much scarier than seeing every little detail as is seen in todays movies. I don't cover my eyes but sorta feel the same about sexual scenes. Our imaginations made it even better. The killing or the sex.

Rogruth- do you remember the original "The Thing?" with James Arness? The monster never showed up until the last scene. Saw it when I was a tad. Didn't sleep alone for several days.

I was a boy, too, back in the 50's when I first saw that movie. When they opened that greenhouse inner-door and The Thing struck out at them, with the thorns flicking off his knuckles , I leaped across three seats ( and across friends sitting in them,) to sit next to my best friend saying, "holy shite did ya see that? Did ya see THAT !!!" Totally cool and scary. I can still see it all in my mind's eye.
Even the dramatic way they discovered the shape of the alien ship buried in the ice was beautifully suggestive, letting us figure it out quickly for ourselves. Real nice.

Looked like a big stalk of asparagus with a face. More funny than scary.
Re: Favorite Movies
Yes, I remember. All of the lead up was the scary part.
The later remake by John Carpenter was also scary and followed the original story a little better.
The scary thing here was never knowing who or where the THING was.
I think the original story was by John W. Campbell and was named "Who Goes There?".
I think it was written in the 1930s.

Just thought of an old Sci-Fi job that was fairly scary and not silly: " IT "
