Hobo Jungle
Re: Hobo Jungle
John, I was at that airshow a number of times with my father during the late 70s. It was a great airshow.
When I rode freights I was always scared of ending up in Gary. I would hitchhike and take the ferry across Lake Michigan instead. I wonder how Gary is now?

Would you be comfortable telling us why you had that feeling?
Re: Hobo Jungle
Gary is, (maybe was, now) a huge steel town. Inland Steel had several large plants, and US Steel. Plus the air currents from Southeast Chicago, which also had the big Republic Steel plants, and both areas have quite a few refineries. That just about guarantees bad air.

Robert, Nice collection of old bikes at that shop. There was a shop in south Houston that had a massive collection of old bikes. Even a couple of Elvis's old FLH's.

They look like some serious treasures.

Re: Hobo Jungle
Murph, I rode past Gary on the bus when I was 16 and was shocked by what I saw, but that wasn't the true reason. Other hobos warned me about Gary. Do you know what a jack roller is?

Re: Hobo Jungle
There's a couple definitions for "jackrolling".
One is: One who robs a drunken or sleeping person.
The other is: Gang raping a person.

On a trip to St. Charles, Illinois circa 2000, I made a wrong turn and saw a bit of the outskirts of Gary, which was literally a huge dump/landfill. Several miles of refuse, right along side of the interstate. Never saw any of the actual city. Do not regret missing the tour.

While Bath House Barry breaks down because he can't do enough to strip law abiding citizens of their right to bear arms..

Putin laughs at our joke of a commander in chief..

ATTENTION ALL CRIMINALS, WACKO'S and OUTLAWS. OBUMMER has just made it harder for law abiding gunowners to buy guns, and NOTHING to stop you from getting yours on the street, stealing one, etc. Oh and terrorist, all the gun free zones are still gun free. One good thing, gun sales are up mfgs and legit dealers are doing well.

The kid called today from school and said she forgot some stuff she needed for class, could I drop it off...sure, I said, the Z hasn't been out for awhile.
We crossed over the old Western Maryland main-line just west of the Medford quarry:

Maryland Midland operates here now, from Highfield to Emory Grove. Their maintenance facility is the yard at Union Bridge, which was the original maintenance facility for the WM, built in 1862 or thereabouts.
On the back side of New Windsor we cross the WM again:

Hey, what's that piece of equipment for sale?
One pass with this baby and the driveway is clear:

OshKosh it says...
After making my way through security at her middle school I dropped the stuff off. It's pathetic that it has come to that.
On the way home we passed Springdale School:

Built in 1854, it looks pretty good. Twenty or so years ago it was struck by lightning and gutted by fire. The farmer whose land it sits on had it rebuilt...bully for him!
Back at the house the dogs find a sliver of afternoon sun to lay in, trying to stay warm:

Ah, the glories of the invention known as the heat pump...we're slowly freezing to death.

I'll confess that this is something that I've ever wondered about......
People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
