Interesting head lights on 2 of those Harley's. Are they electric or maybe gas ?

If you take a look at the bikes. From back to front you will see a 1910 Harley ,1911 Yale, With the front bike being a 1912 Harley. Headlight work on acetylene. Place some carbide in that tank and fill with water. Those tanks in original paint are very desirable to the motorcycle antique motorcycle crowd. Carbide and water is very corrosive.

Looks tenuous, but exciting. A little bit of loose gravel and you're over the side...
Actually, the Old Man, who was a highway engineer for Maryland, used to tell me that a cable system would hold back most anything as long as you didn't take down to many support-poles in the process, or hit it at a high speed perpendicular to the cable. It's designed for a hard glancing blow. You still see a lot of cable-based barriers in Upstate New York, but with small galvanized steel poles...

My grandfather drove trucks over the Tuscarora when they were building the PA Turnpike. He used to tell a story about a truck full of dynamite that went over one of those railings on the McConnellsburg side.....he boom was heard well into Greencastle...no idea if that was true or not.

As I remember the old cable guards in Fayette county, the posts were thicker and seemed shorter. Almost like telephone/power poles cut off at an angle to facilitate water runoff. The cables were attached to the front side of the posts with hooked bolts thru the posts. The cables had a galvanized backing plate that I think held the cables an inch or so away from the posts. Sound familiar to anyone?

Very much so.

That type of cable guard was also in use in eastern Ohio at least until 1960.
I don't think eastern Kentucky used any type of guard on most roads. Some
of the US and state roads did have posts without cables in really bad places.

Motorcyclists dread those cable barriers and with good reason. A mate of mine had a leg amputated by one, well the surgeons finished the job but it sawed almost through his leg.

Looks like railway telegraph poles/lines running down the right-hand side...unusual?
During my college days I was up and over Sideling Hill many times further south, but that was before the state gashed it with the cut for I-68. Back then it was a loooooooong switch-back up and over. While the cut is horrific in appearance, it has reduced the drive-time by ten minutes or so.
The only time I got that old Opel GT over 100 mph was on the long downgrade on the eastern face of Sideling Hill...not the most brilliant thing I've ever done.

How about telephone lines?
Those look like some that were in rural eastern Ohio in the 1940s.
