Squaw Creek Coal U36C project
Re: Squaw Creek Coal U36C project
I don't know why the high nose looks wrong but it isn't, something optical there.
Some work on this thing. Jim (Maroon) got me the trucks, these are correct and the best ones I have had. Really nice, the springing works. Drive is installed, two motors, reduction transfer cases, and KTM gearboxes. The wheels on these KTM gearboxes, PSC really I guess, tread on, metric, and my others are rim insulated, but these were hub insulated, so I rim insulated them on the lathe. I bored out the plastic hubs and locktited short brass rod into all of them, tapped them for the metric axles. They all run true.
Wish I could get some more of those GE trucks.
Also Jim, the boxes are coming.

Re: Squaw Creek Coal U36C project
Some progress on the diesel. Radiator grills are installed, number board holes cut, and the motors and transfer cases are in and ready for drive trucks, but you can't see them. I built new end plates, brass so I can solder. they can be removed to paint.
The holes along the running board are for tinned short brass dowels to be glued in so I can solder the stanchions to brass. I wanted to have the stanchions applied to the side like the real one.
I bought a piece of circuitry a long way back for a Mars light and never used it. Maybe I can use it here for the flashing yellow light on the top of the cab. I would need to find a yellow lens in the right domed shape.
Anyway I hope you all aren't getting tired of seeing this thing.

Nope! Keep it up! We need someone here to actually do some model building.
Egg salad is still chicken salad when you think about it.
Re: Squaw Creek Coal U36C project
No way getting tired of this please keep it coming; a really "out there" project and not for the faint of heart either. I'm liking the nose and those end plates you fashioned for the pilots a lot too, some seriously good fabrication work there.
I have an LWS U-boat in the queue, so this is instructive too.

Yellow flasher for sale here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Circuitron-Caboose-Flasher-Model-CF-1-1201-/221778552966
Of course, a yellow LED can probably be had for less money, especially with that high shipping price.
One word of caution: My brother and I have learned the hard way that it is critical to use the correct power supply with these flashing circuits. Either a battery or a "track power supply" that will take track power and convert it to constant DC. The Circuitron TP-1 or TP-2 will work for simple flashers (and I may have one to send to you, Allan, and maybe a yellow LED too. I will look and PM you). For the Mars lights you need the TP-3 or its equivalent, as the incandescent bulbs of the Mars light draw more current.

Re: Squaw Creek Coal U36C project
I second Jim's comments and will mention a conventional circuit board colored LED can makes a nice looking and durable "bucket" lensed yellow flasher once "tuned" to the ps with the correct resistor.
As I recall this one runs off a Tp-2 I got care of Jim, and works great.

Hey thanks for all the compliments!
Picture from the front.
I will get that circuit out and see what I have here. A Mars light rotates I guess and a flasher goes on and off. The Squaw Creek engine had a light that rotated, (thanks for the utube Marroon), probably I will have to use a battery for this to have constant dc. Plenty of room inside.

Very distinctive units, for sure. Nice that somebody posted video.

Re: Squaw Creek Coal U36C project
Engine running now, ended up with All Nation drives, open frame motor, dual flywheels. All wheels have electrical pickup except the center ones. Performance is good but not as good as my KTM's, needs a little more voltage on starting than they do.
Soon I can start painting it after some more details on the body. I need some decals to replicate the lettering and don't have a clue. The red stripe must match the color of said decals perfectly so I need the decals first. Match the paint to the decals. Also I need that particular blocky lettering like the picture earlier. Anybody have a source?

I am fascinated with this thread.
I do not have the skills, equipment
or ability to do anything like this.
Have great admiration for those that do.

Re: Squaw Creek Coal U36C project
I too am fascinated. I have pretty much no interest in Diesels after the SD-9, but this one I like. The color scheme is engaging.
I am kind of hoping that one of these sets of castings never finds its way to my door - I have enough projects!
If i do wind up attempting one, it will get fantasy SD-9 trucks - very close, but three brake cylinders. I have Atlas SDP-35 bodies that I can trade . . .
