Well, actually it would be closer to 12" high if you did all 4 stories, and that would be to the top of the 4th floor ceiling joists. I wouldn't be counting sub-flooring and finished flooring at each level, then you'd have to decide on what type of roof you wanted, whether gable, hip, flat, etc. I knew it would be more than 10 inches when I did the calcs in my head, but thank you for commenting on every thread, else I wouldn't have seen that I entered 6" instead.

Add at least another 1' for each floor joist and then presume that the 1st floor joists are on ground level (no foundation or partial rise up into that entrance) and I'm up to 11"; now add another 1' for the ceiling rafter and then another couple of inches for the roof that needs adequate pitch and/or the style depicted -- could be an easy 15". Maybe add another 1" for the foundation and/or riser into the entrance - 16".

If you build using full scale lumber, using basically the same construction styles as 1:1, you'll find that most kit and RTR buildings are undersize as they compress scale and loose things like floor & wall thickness.

Here's one of my efforts that is all board by board construction down to the individual clapboards and bricks for the chimney.

Re that big hotel, its a gorgeous thing but you could model it in HO as a semi-relief against a backdrop at least 3 feet from the front of the baseboard especially if the 'main street' scene was up higher as if seen from a mountain across a valley. Then it could add a convincing depth not to mention the details such as the figures (also HO - obviously) especially if this scene was framed by some more scenery to further accentuate the illusion of distance. Hmmm, maybe I'll bear this in mind for some experiments of my own if I ever get the chance to resume playing trains which are currently like Pompeii after the eruption in terms of being buried beneath tons of ....mess.

That's a lovely piece of work Rufus, that building of yours. The upper storey on the first picture has a very strong 'Swiss' appearance, it's not just the shutters either, its the overall look. When I had my HO empire many years ago, I built a lot of Faller models because I liked that look so much and I still do.

Apropos of nothing, Switzerland ranks #1 on all the countries I've visited as the most beautiful by a long shot with Germany - the Munster area - coming in second. Switzerland won through the combination of the Alps which must be the best looking mountains in the world, the quaint and interesting detailing such as multi-coloured roof tiles and the incredible cleanliness. That last was what struck me most about Germany especially after seeing prosperous hausfraus down on their knees early in the morning, scrubbing their front door step!

Thanks! It's amalgamation of several buildings and stores from my youth, some still standing, some in photos, and some just memories.

If one goes back far enough in time (1500's), my family is Swiss, There are portions of PA where one car very clearly see the Swiss or German, or Scot, or whatever influence still in play and what is in one end of one county can be quite different in the other end.

That's the way it was once upon a time and not all that long ago - used to be ball teams in just about every small town in Franklin Co. when I was a lad - used to go to the local games with my Grandfather; walk over to the park or down the lane from what is not my place in PA to the local field......

They seem a contented and happy bunch, calm and peaceful and focused.
