I missed this one entirely!! I gave the photo too quick a look, missing the brown of the fawn entirely (Congratulations, Sarge, for the sharper eye,) thinking it was a worn spot in the grass or a dried clump of something-or-other. For a guy some consider possessed of an eye-for-detail, this teaches me I had better slow-my-roll and calm waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay the heckdown and see the fawns!

8) Murph, thanks for your very kind words! 8)

One should never underestimate the stupidity of the human race.

Amen to that.

And, now we need some pictures of tractors!

Here's a picture of a local dude making hay on my upper field. I don't have the best quality of grasses, so I've never offered it before, but while doing my father-in-law's very nice front field, he decided to use what I had. Nice to have the proper equipment to make a job easier.

Image

Of course, it's a Ford, but we won't hold that against him.

Image

My daughter took this photo from the top, looking south. He got 37 bales of 800 pounds apiece. Not a bad haul, being as he got it for free.

Image

The ground dips more sharply to the east, and is very undulating, which is impossible to discern from distance. One spot, however, is perfectly sloped and rounded. I call it 'the amphitheater', and maybe someday I'll put a small stage at the bottom and invite Murph to recite something Shakespearean or Monty Python-ean to a full crowd a-seat on the slope.

There will, of course, be lots of people for his audience. I was out walking across my field some days ago, and I head a whispering voice. It said "Hey Dirtman, listen up ...". It sounded suspiciously like a larger-than-Life dude from Leola of Lancaster County of whom I once made acquaintance. He continued on something like this... "People will come, Pete. They'll come to Orangeville for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway, not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. "Of course, we won't mind if you have a look around," you'll say. "It's only twenty dollars per person." They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it, for it is money they have, and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the tractors, and stand in shirt-sleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have a reserved seat upon one of the rumbling Farmalls, where they wished they could have sat when they were children. And they'll watch the waving grasses pass by underneath, and it'll be as if they'd dipped themselves in magic waters. The serenity will be so thick, they'll have to brush it away from their faces. People will come, Pete. The one constant through all the years has been Farmalls. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But Farmalls have marked the time. This field, this brush-hog, is a part of our past, Pete. It reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be again. Oh, people will come, Pete. People will most definitely come."

The way I figure, Murph's oration will be the 'pièce de résistance' of a glorious, sunny, cumulus-studded Summer day.

Then, (in Tramp's words), we can all go out and get drunk.

Seems to welcome a portable cushion for that wooden 3-sided perch, eh?

Did use to have a nice cushion on it for the driver and the beagle.

Could use a new one....a cushion, that is.

Murph didn't take the bait. Maybe I should have mentioned the honorarium...??

Rufus, nice pic of the Cub. What happened to the exhaust pipe?

Here's two more pics of the attention the groundhogs have generated.... same shitty camera, but two beautiful birds.
A red-tailed hawk...

Grandfather did not like the exhaust back in his face. He re-routed it under and out the back using some rather heavy galvanized plumbing,

I only met Hev once in person. It was at the York TCA meet in October, 2010.
We must have talked for two hours while Mrs.Hev was very patient.
I get rather upset when thinking about Hev and a few others.
Time to stop on this.

Hey Pete, how many of those varmint carcasses do you think got raked up into the baler? Ugh, as a kid I remember helping to stack bales in the wagon and later in the barn, only to reach down and get a handful of minced rabbit or some other poor creature unlucky enough to get pulled into the baler en masse. Worst was finding some or all of a black snake hanging out of a bale...

Looks like this elite group has discovered a new dieting method! Maybe you guys can patent it? :P

I sorely miss old Hev. Being at R&T without Hev holding court just isn't right. There is a big hole there. Maybe those who have met him and live within a couple hours drive could congregate this fall at his spot and raise a few in his honor? It seems only fitting. Assuming Mrs. Hev approves. Pete?

As soon as I get my 31 A coupe reassembled with the new steering box and on the road again I plan on getting my International 8-16, 1918 vintage, put back into running shape after completely rendering the garage unusable for 3 years. My! How time flies.

All this talk about British sport cars brings back fond memories of my 1960 Sprite! Those were the days! As with my Model A both cars had about 40 hp, didn't like going over 55 and had what is jokingly referred to as a heater. All it did was keep the frost buildup on my arctic boots at a minimum! Door keys??? Reach in through the sliding plastic window and move the only door latch! Glove box lock? Whats a glove box? Trunk key? What is a trunk (boot)! Ah yes! Great days never to return. By the way, the 8 3/4 gal tank combined with a road trip from PA down to Lynchburg, VA. with 47.85 miles per gallon of 31 cent Gulf regular never came close to breaking the bank. Only 36 mpg around town. Drag racing other Sprites knocked my mileage down to only 32!

Damn! Where can I find a GOOD Sprite to be buried in?

Tony
