I saw a real moving picture of a pretty young lady in a military cemetery at her husbands grave. I don't cry easy but sometimes something like that does.

From the business pages this AM, an article on cutting your commute time from Manhattan to the Hampton's for the weekend, by seaplane. Included was this neat aerial view of the Hellgate Bridge and surroundings:


I spent a few summers out in Southold at the far end of Long Island when I was a kid. That was kind of a working-class version of the Hamptons. Wasn't much there back then, just a few bungalows along the shore with a small marina where you could tie up your boat. Spent most of my time fishing and reading comic books...man, those were the days.

Do you know how long the bridge at the lower left has been there?
I rode Metro-North and Amtrak from Poughkeepsie to NYC and return
within the past ten years and do not remember it.I was probably
more interested in the train stuff and didn't notice.

Roger - That's the old Triborough Bridge...it opened in 1936. It got renamed the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge five or six years ago. To be honest with you I don't recall paying much attention to it either...I usually try to sit on the right-hand side north-bound so I'm looking out onto the Long Island Sound once the train reaches Connecticut.

I was thinking the same thing, but I think the answer is that most photos/images of the bridge (Hellgate) crop out the Triboro or are shot from a vantage where it (Triboro) is behind the photographer/image taker.

When I look up at the stars from the Hobo Jungle, I see maybe 2,500 stars and two galaxies.

When the 24 year old Hubble Space Telescope looks up, as far as a Hubble eye can see, there are galaxies. This Hubble image contains approximately 10,000 galaxies.

The galaxies visible to unaided eyes are the Milky Way (where I live) and the barely perceptible smudge of the Andromeda Galaxy. I can't see Andromeda if I look right at it, but looking beside it a ghostly smudge is visible.
